The Hurin?

The media hype has already started regarding the new Tolkein book which is coming out.  The question is, is this just going to be another patchwork of incomplete tales like the Silmarillion, or is it going to be a completed Epic.

I am not sure they have done Tolkein well by publishing his past incomplete works.

No, but it was on Yahoo the day I posted this item. I believe it is "Children of Hurin", its supposedly a partially complete epic which his son has finished. It sounds like it was a manuscript which he started and abandoned before publishing the Lord of the Rings -- which may mean its going to be disappointing like the others, but we can always hope. Tolkein seems to have been a perfection and often chided CS Lewis for knocking out books for publishers in 90 days.

Yeah, when you are in "epic zone" head space, the others probably seem like quick and sloppy, eh? I go back and forth on that one......my book started out small, and ended up being 2 books and 625,000 words......a michener-esque look at America over the last 30 years.....thru a Tibetan viewer's eyes :-)

In general, I have always been disappointed in (a) books published posthumously by a good author but "finished" by someone who should have known better and (b) a relatively good author who, for whatever reason, publishes crappy early work to take advantage of his current fame.

I wouldn't like to see work that's not up to my best with my name on it and, I suspect, no author who cared about his reputation would want to either.

Stephanie, that is normally true, have not read this -- but it appears to be selling well. There is at least one exception to that -- the Dune prequels being co-authored by his son and some other writer, are in my opinion better written than the sequels written by Frank Herbert himself.
