captive

me captive

for too long.

The feelings

so intense

and so strong.

These illusions

that bind us

trip me up.

I've lost my balance

using you

as a crutch.

I need

to break away

from your ties.

I've tried to distract

myself from truth

Holding on to lies.

Gone is

my innocence.

free from barriers

I have come to realize

it is myself

I have missed.

Sue ~ Great way of presenting a soul's return to independence. As hard as it is sometimes to sever ties and no longer be bound to that which hinders our growth as people, sometimes it must be done for the greater good as well as self preservation. Beautiful poem.

Nicely written. This touches a nerve for many men and women alike. Sometimes the ties that bind us to another are the hardest to shrug off. No one knows that better than me. In most cases, they are mostly figurative. Occassionally, they are both figurative and literal. Some find a security in being so closely bound to another soul while others feel completely enslaved and robbed of all freedoms. If the conditions exist for too long, all sense of self or self-worth seem to blend with the other person. If that is not something one can live with, it is scary as hell.
