Rail Travel: A European Plus
Travelling around the wrold can be fun or it can be a nightmare. In large part if depends upon how YOU do your home work, pay attention to detail & use the resources available to you when planning atrip.
When I ma in Europe I prefer to travel around by train, especially now that the EU has eliminated the various borders & the need for having your passport stamped at each border. There is a great page that is part of the RailEurope site. You can access this link at: http://www.raileurope.com/us/search/index.htm
This will allow you to check out trians, routes, tours by trian, etc. all over Europe.
Something else to consider is that the food on these trains is superb! The service is excellent & you will find that you can truly enjoy a more leisurely pace that is not part of air travel. There are also pqckages wheer you can get the train fare,a hotel, even ferry fare all for one pric, usually discounteed from the regular single item prices. Enjoy!

Donald is so right with this. In the late 70s I traveled large portions of Europe by train and it is the only way to go. When the proto-inlaws decided to do Europe for their 50th Anniversary the chose the EuroRail pass.
One suggestion if you decide to travel this way - get off in the little towns and villages, explore, meet folks and see parts of the countries tourists rarely enjoy.

Have a great day!
This takes you from downtown to downtown. When you compare with flying: 90min pre-check-in, trip from city to airport and airport to city, then this train definitely beats air traffic. Same for north-south. ICE from Hamburg to Basel is just incredibly fast. And I agree: much more convenient. You can walk around, visit the restaurant car, stretch legs. Much nicer than in the air.
What are the best ways to go off into little towns from the major train hubs? I was considering renting a car and driving the whole of Europe rather than taking the train since it would cost about the same for the month, but we'd have more freedom. The only problem I forsee is that I've heard driving in the cities is a pain. If someone has some experience with this, I'd appreciate it.
