First things first, Most people over look some of the simplest things involving energy conservation..
The First thing to do is change all of your household light bulbs from incadascent to flourescent light bulbs.. The reason why is for example, incadescent bulbs take (60 watts of power to produce 60 watts of light) And flourescent bulbs take only (13 watts of power to produce 60 watts of light output) which saves 47 watts per hour.. That adds up to a lot!..
Secondly many people wash clothes with hot water, which takes more because if you have an electric water heater it's using more power.. Wash with cold when you can...
Third Keep your thermostat between 71-75 when cooling, and 68-71 when heating.. But if your house is not insulated well, you may need to adjust these numbers a little bit, but not much... Also, always keep the thermostat on AUTO... this way as it constantly keeps the temperature at a constant level, it saves up to 7% on your bill...
Fourth, cut down on your shower times.. a 15-30 minute shower can be cut down to 5-10 minutes saving on an electric water heater....
Fifth, try to use a microwave over the conventional oven when applicable, most microwaves use from 1/2 to 1/4 of the power an oven typically uses..... Also use a george foreman grill when the microwave won't do, as they have low power consumption as well...
Sixth, try to keep the blinds open during the day, therefore you may not need to use any lights and save even more... Also ceiling fans can keep a good breeze going to move around cold or hot air when the system is off, so that will save a lot as well...
Follow these tips and watch as your next bills will start to go down quite a bit doing so..
