The Mozart Cure

The market is dull. I can't find a trade. The early rallies have faded, along with the sell offs. I'm restless and having trouble concentrating. Rather than waste the day, I should sit down and do some analysis or study. To try and take the edge of this angst, I head down to the CD rack looking for something.

Ah Mozart. Nothing soothes my ragged nerves like Mozart. There is a gentleness to Mozart's music that I cannot describe Today I selected Piano Concertos. Don't ask me which ones, I just grabbed the one disc from the collection. This is not music I particulary know.

I listen to Mozart and I wish I had been able to master the piano. I listen to Mozart and find myself not studying, just listening. Each phrase and melody feels perfect.

I love Mozart! He was such a genius, he never rewrote any of his work. They were perfect right off the top of his head. My daughter is playing his Flute Concerto in D Major, which is a very tricky piece.

The flute is other instrument that I failed at
I will have to seek out the flute concerto you mentioned and give it a listen.

Pat - agreed. Funny, as a young musician I used to Mozart rather dull - not all that challenging, too balanced, predictable, etc. But as I got older, I came to appreciate him more and more. He didn't change, I just matured enough to really appreciate his genius. My favorite is still the Requiem, although some of the dramatic operas come close, especially Don Giovanni.

I never think of Mozart as predictable. I feel like he gives you a musical phrase, and just as you get comfortable with it and think you know what is coming next, he hands you a surprise and takes the music in a new direction.

I'm a big opera fan, and Don Giovanni is a favorite. Actually I like all of Mozart's operas except 'Clemenza di Tito" That one is a real clunker.
I never liked the sound of German, but it Mozart's hands it can be quite lovely. No one writes vocal ensemble pieces like Mozart.

Mozart elicits emotions (or memories of emotions) for me. Some composers habitually select certain keys when they want to express particular emotions. Mozart is known to have used G minor to express tragedy or melancholy, ie., the Piano Quartet K. 478, the String Quintet K. 516, the Symphonies K. 183 and K. 550. I enjoy listening to these Mozart pieces to validate my own sadness...listening to these pieces deepen the experience which subsequently allows me to pass through these feelings and onto whatever follows.

Right now I'm listening to Craig Armstrong's "Piano Works"....not exactly "classical" in the classical sense but his compositions urge descent into the self, nonetheless.
