I had vowed to stay away from these immigration debates until this conversation took place at work a couple of days ago.
Manuel and I were discussing President Bush's recent tour of Latin America when somehow the conversation took a turn that I wasn't expecting. Conversation below.
Manuel " Tim, did you hear about the illegal immigrants that were arrested yesterday "
Me " No, what's up with that ? "
Manuel " I don't remeber where it happened, but about 400 illegals were arrested, and ICE had to let them go because they couldn't identify them because of their fake documents. Then they arrested their children, and the parents wern't allowed to visit their children. That is bullcrap "
Me " Where did you read about this ? I've never heard of such a thing "
Manuel " I'm telling you Tim, I saw it. I think it was on CNN or FOX "
Me " I've never heard of the children of illegal immigrants being arrested, usually it's the other way around "
Manuel " I'm telling you Tim, I really saw it "
Then as Manuel and I were discussing one of the local chicken plants that has been reported to have 75 % of it's workforce illegal, James jumped in on the conversation.
James " Tim, would you dip your hands into a vat of dead chickens ? I wouldn't do it. The illegals are doing jobs that Americans won't do "
Me " I'm not going to quit my job here, but if I was out of a job and needed money, yes I would "
James " Maybe you would, but you have to admit that there are Americans who won't do those jobs "
Me " I'll give you that one James, but you can't make a blanket statement saying that Americans won't do those jobs "
James " But Tim, you have to admit that there are Americans who won't do those jobs. You know people like that don't you ? "
Me " Yes I do, but then again the blanket statement Americans won't do those jobs ain't flying here "
James " Who will do those jobs at the chicken plant of all of the illegals are deported ? "
Me " The county has a 10% unemployment rate. I'm sure that there are more than enough American workers to fill those jobs "
James " Yeah, I'll give you that one "
Manuel " But Tim, who do you blame ? The illegals or the people who hire them ? "
Me " I blame both. The illegals are using fake documents or getting paid under the table and not paying taxes. Also, the people who hire them are getting rich from the profits by paying the illegals less money, and the people who own stock in the companies who hire illegals are getting their pockets padded as well. Illegal immigration has become big buisness. Big buisness is also in the politician's pockets. There is a lot of blame to spread around everywhere "
Manuel " You've got it Tim "
Then James proceeded to get into an argument with my boss over a 25 cent softdrink. He said that after his 20 % employee discount, the 25 cent softdrink should only cost 5 cents. Unbelievable. My jaw actually dropped to the floor as I was listening to James rant. James is a college student. I only hope that he isn't an example of our Nation's future.
Interesting how conversations sometimes take a turn in a different direction.

SCHOOL ANSWERING MACHINE
(This is hilarious - no wonder some people were offended!)
This is the message that the Pacific Palisades High School(California)
staff voted unanimously to record on their school telephone answering
machine. This is the actual answering machine message for the school.
This came about because they implemented a policy requiring students
and parents to be responsible for their children's absences and
missing homework.
The school and teachers are being sued by parents who want their
children's failing grades changed to passing grades - even though
those children were absent 15-30 times during the semester and did not
complete enough schoolwork to pass their classes.

Did they forget about the LEGAL US citizens who were lined up waiting in line to apply for the jobs at the meat processing plants after they were popped by ICE?
Don't know about ole James, I worry about the boy sometimes.
Frankly, I think as long as we're going after the uneducated and non-English-speaking, it's time to hunt down the Internet trollers, mass email spammers, and flamers and have them deported.

Eamon, loved the answering machine message, its so true.
Just saw an interview on TV news about the 3x your out law that the US applies to its citizens regarding prison terms. This law doesnt apply to illegals, one man said, that in his 8 hour shift, he arrested one illegal 4x's and this illegal was never deported. When asked why, he thought that Congress did not react to this and toughen the laws, he said, the businesses that hire these people put alot of pressure on the politians, so the politians dont make waves.
