I would love to get your comments and ratings on the first chapter of my novel 'Char'. I'm not trolling for high ratings or feel good comments, though of course they are welcome. 'It was good' or 'I liked it' helps my ego, but it doesn't help my writing much. Any honest rating or comment is welcome, but I'm especially looking for people who are willing to actually read the chapter and offer solid, honest comments that I can take away from the contest and use to improve what I think is already an outstanding story. If you happen to like the story and rate it higly, that's a very desirable bonus.
Char came into the contest along with 45 other entries, got a few very high ratings, then attracted some drive-bys that drove it down into the 5.x range. Since then the few comments have generally been favorable and ratings have generally been high. Unfortunately, Char is for the most part getting lost in the huge number of contestants.
So what is Char about?
One Fourth of July evening near a small town in near-future Wisconsin, Char of the Real People walks out of a mud hole that she didn't walk into, wearing a deerskin skirt and carrying a crude wooden spear. She has a larger than life-sized wolf tattoo on her chest. She is bleeding from a spear wound in her leg. She finds herself in what to her is a strange and empty forest. She is apparently being chased by mysterious and powerful enemies. Is she dreaming? She hopes so, and that's the only explanation she can think of, but if this is a dream it seems frighteningly solid.
I worked very hard to create a believable, sympathetic, and yet unique and mysterious character in Char. I'm very enthusiastic about this chapter and about the book. I consider this by far the best writing I've done so far. If you have a little time and would like to drop by and read, rate, and hopefully comment on Char I would be most grateful.
