I know many of my nothern friends are still in defrost mood from the harsh winter ya'll suffered, but I am curious to see who's ready to plant the garden? If you aren't ready to plant are you planning to plant? What will you plant?
For those of you who raise chickens how is that going? We have about 21 hens and are getting about 15 eggs a day. Which dh and my son sell for 1.50 a dozen to make back our price of feed. Also how long into the summer do ya'll get eggs? Due to our extreme heat the eggs usually slow down at the end of May and have completely stopped by mid June.
My husband, son and I tilled up the garden several times last week, then again once during the week. They made the rows and the garden is ready to go. The cucumber plot is also ready to go as well. We should be able to plant by next sunday, when the first quarter moon is right. My dh swears by the farmer's almanac.
We usually sell what we can to pay ourselves back for the cost of the plants and seeds, then we eat the rest. I say eat, but I actually mean that I will put the tomatoes up in jars, the bell peppers we usually cut those up and throw em in the freezer for seasoning and the eggplants I boil then bag those into pint ziplocs to use for a rice dressing, smothered shrimps, etc. I also have neighbor who lets me invade his fig tree and I use that to make fig jelly using jello as a gelatin and flavoring.
We are planting 12 tomato plants, ranging from better boy to creole, then four black beauty eggplants, and four bell peppers. We usually plant the cucumber plots using seeds in sections. We try to ensure that we will have cucumbers throughout the summer season. It doesn't always work out like this though, as the high summer tempatures usually get our veggie plants by the end of June or early part of July. Oh well it's great while it lasts,
PS Do you have fruit trees? We have a Japanese plum tree (picture at the bottom of the article)that's full of fruits and a satusma tree that's not yet showing signs of fruit, but that's a young tree so we will just have to wait and see.
