do you know how much the military wants my son

My son has a heart problem. His main valve in his heart doesn't close all the way. So part of his blood flows back into his heart. He cant play football or wrestle in school, because he cant lift no more than 100 lbs in weights. One of his best friends has had five operations, because he of the samething. My son has a heart doctor. I had at one time asked if my son would ever be able to join the military. His said NO!.

My sons a senior this year. So there is a lot of militarys asking the seniors if they want to join. I remember them doing that when I was a senior. One of them called my son yesterday and asked him what he wanted to do when he graduated. He said that he was going to welding school. They said that we could train you in the ............ I dont want to say which one it was. He said that his doctor told him that he couldnt ever join the military do to his heart  and this guy on the phone asked my son, what was wrong and how bad is it. This guy , told my son that he would be seen by one of their doctor and they have ways to change it to get him in.

I was so mad, when my son told me what he said. I know they need the man power, but I think that was wrong.

My son told him that he has thought about it before, but that he cant take that chance.

Was I wrong to get mad?

I would be extremely upset. I'm glad your son told you about it and that he has the good sense not to fall for such tactics.

sherry I wish that my son didn't have this heart problem, His heart doctor has the same thing as he does. He would get on to my son if I was to tell on him. So I guess what he has is nothing to play with. Arnold schwarzenegger has the same thing and has had many open heart surgeries, due to lifting weights.

kNightmare I am also afraid if they ever open draft, that they would over look his condion to get him thur. I have to worry all the time with him.

oh no...you aren't wrong to get mad at this. people defend the actions of recruiters all the time no matter how despicable, dishonest or unethical their behavior is. All they care about are quotas, not the individuals they try and enlist.

arlene thank you. I thought I was over reacting, but then I havent heard from a man yet. Mothers are kind and understand. I know my son, if he could he would go. If it would give him a really good training. He would go for it, but he knows he cant because of his heart. He really would of been a great football player, but knew he couldnt ever play football.

You are not wrong to be angry. It also sounds like you have raised a bright boy who knows his medical limitations. Hopefully he keeps himself safe when you are not around by trying to over do what he is able to do.

the military keeps reducing minimum IQ, moral standards, criminal history, physical defects etc. etc. to entice warm bodies. It's disgusting.

I was in a coffee shop the other day and I saw a note on the cork board saying "Looking for a part -time job? Join the National Guard." Since when was war a part-time job? Yes, you have a right to be mad.

Ron thank you. Yes they see it as a job. Thats how he was trying to get my son to join, by asking him what he wanted to do when he got out of school.

This would make me mad, but keep in mind that the people who visit high schools and the sort are just front-line recruiters. I believe your son would be denied entrance way before he was given a date to report for basic training. After you take all the ASVAPs, etc., then you go for medical exams. I almost was denied entrance because I had sleptwalked as a child. Try not to stress over this too much.

Don't get mad...it's not worth your time. You already know the answer given by a doctor who is most familiar with your son's condition. Recruiter's jobs are to recruit...and we know they'll say and do whatever it takes to meet their quota. They don't care of it's a waste of someone else's time and they ultimately get turned down. Just chalk it up to be no more annoying than a telemarketer calling during dinner. Your son has direction in knowing what he wants to do. Just support him on his decision and work with him in helping to take care of his phsyical condition.

Do you know how to tell when a recruiter is lying? When he is speaking. They are worse than car-salesman. Anything it takes to get another check on the board.

What did your son respond when asked and after he told the recruiter he had a bad valve? Was your con considering joining the services? Also unless he's going to be doing micro-welding, in my machine shop experiences, welding requires a lot of lifting and physical exertion and he's allowed to do that? Is he going to serve his country in some other way that does not require enrollment in the armed services? If not, why not? Will he be active in community affairs, his local political office of choice, will he volunteer at the local hospital, hospice, Relay for Life? Again if not, why not?

What ever happened to altruistic behavior? Doing good for your community without being asked?

if the recruiter was going to lie to the army then ya thats messed up. but he may have been talking about getting your son a doctor if joins up and get his heart in better condition. and to the others who ask why not then, the army requires alot of physical training and exorsise and you are required to pass an army physical test wich consists of a two mile run in 15:54 depending on your age, 42 push ups in two minutes and 52 situps in two minutes and if his heart could not meet those standards he would be medicaly dischardged.
