the Wesendonck Lieder? they were the models for Tristan und Isolde and this particular Lied, Traume was the model for the Lievestod in Tristan u Isolde. It has very long sustaind lines that require immense stamina because they must also be sung with very delicate pianissimo technique, but bespeak disillusionment with life.
Tonia, "taunt and tantalize" us is nearly the exact translation of Wagner's Lied in fact. It's also the main theme that appears in Lohrengrin. Wagner may have been a romantic composer, but he was a pretty hard-nosed fellow with few illusions about life and so in Lohrengrin, although there is the knight in white he is actually the other half to the dark unseen knight. He pairs good with bad in such a way that the one cannot exist without the other. Lohrengrin has to make a vow that he must keep although in the end it brings great pain. although he symbolizes purity and good and divinity he reveals agony and misery and imposes grief on Elizabeth.
you have the same kind of double nature in Parsifal and in Tristan u Isolde-- and so they are very interesting psychological studies for character development.
oh Donna, sorry I missed the graceful bit-- this bird also tried to take a piece of my finger, so maybe looks elegant and beautiful but does a job on the hand. And besides when on land, they lumber about from side to side and don't look so graceful when they have their butts up and bellies covered with mud from fishing about in the muck-- but they know how to beg.
Susan Marie--that's very nice and sweet, but those buggers can be very nasty and they bite--just ask my fingers. And they snort like pigs, too. They look beautiful in pictures, but the last thing you want is to be bitten by a swan or attacked by one because they aer big birds and very strong and very aggressive when they want to be.
