Well, watching the news the other night I heard there is an interesting new trend in Columbus – the rise of racist gangs. It seems that Ohio imports a lot of California’s problems. I guess I’m just surprised that officials were surprised. I’ve taught in buildings with Crips and Bloodz scrawled on the wall (and I live in a small town). Ohio has been gaining an increasingly Hispanic population so it is only natural that gangs would come with that. (This is no way should be taken as me “dissing” the Hispanic community – then again….) I realize that it used to be the irish and the Italians going at it. Even my word processing program automatically capitalizes Italians but not Irish for me, maybe Bill Gates is racist against us Irish, but then he’s pasty white enough to be one of us.
But, I digress. Columbus is going to become a nightmare. The new gang in Columbus is Avenue 43 or something like that. Their goal is ethnic cleansing from their neighborhoods or whatnot. Some of these guys can’t even speak English. Then again some of the African Americans gangsters can’t speak it very well either. Columbus already has a black versus Somali problem (yes, I realize what color Somalis are). And that doesn’t even account for a a lot of the gangs out there. And yes, I realize there are Russian and Armenian (white gangs) as well as skinheads. But, they don’t seem to cause the trouble the others do. It used to be gangs just messed with each other over drugs and turf and stuff. But, it’s really troublesome that some gangs are promoting ethnic cleansing and acting on it. Especially when eventually Hispanics are probably going to end up a majority in this country.
So will the Hispanic and Black fueds go the way of the Irish and Italians? Is it a growing pain? Or do think think it will get worse?

We have what I call wannabe gangs in South Dakota. If these kids went to LA or Chicago they would be crushed in an instant. They really have no clue.
Gangs are part of our American culture. I think we need to look at why people need to form these gangs to feel accepted and protect themselves. Perhaps they are lashing out against biases and prejudice felt against them due to their skin color, language, economic, and social barriers.
Some poor girl was just sitting at a red light and someone shot at the car she was in and struck her in the head, this girl had a bright future, she not a troublemaker- just and innocent 17 yo sitting in her boyfriend's car at a red light. To date they have not found her killer. This happened the day before school started, she was in my daughter's women's studies class- my daughter works at the Center for Peace- she had to witness the anguish the mother went thru while coming up to the school. What is wrong with these kids?...I still ask - where are their parents.
And yes, we had wanna be gangsters when I was in high school. We laughed at them and most of them dropped out of school to become pathetic losers. Today, kids get killed for laughing at them. They kill outside gangs.
What we have now is a hostile invation of people that want to take our land. They don't want to be Americans. They just want the frebees and a large majority of them would rather sell drugs than work.
The hell with politicaly correct! They are ILLEGAL and their gangs have more members than our Marines and Army combined!

Also I guess you win dollars to donuts. We had two run in with gangs in my extended family; a White (and no it wasn't white supremecist, just street gang.) and an Hispanic.
Good news is that intervention early saved them both.
Unfortunately I have seen that prejudice does impact the Hispanic family unit in that the economics of having to have both parents work leaves the kids vulnerable. And locally hispanic gangs seem to think any hispanic kid is fair game for recruitment through intimidation.
