Continuing on this season's theme, the ladies blew the guys away.
Melinda is simply phenomenal. Lakisha is too, but Melinda has an extra layer of polish. Stephanie, Jordin, Sabrina and Gina (probably in that order) are also excellent.
Haley is not really that bad but is not up to the level of this year's top competitors. In other years, she might have been good enough for the top 12.
Antonella managed to stay marginally on key.
Not much time to write today. I thought Simon was unduly harsh on both Haley and Antonella. I have gone from simply disliking Antonella to now disliking but feeling sorry for her. The judges have not found one decent thing to say to her the entire time and she endured a bunch of bad publicity over what I understand were fake photos (some evidencing simply poor judgment of a teenager were real, but the hardcore porn ones were completely fake as I understand it).
Haley seems like a real sweet kid and did not need to hear Simon say "I don't even know your name."
Clearly, Antonella and Haley should be the ones to go tonight. But I really believe that there could be a big surprise and one of the better singers could get bounced as a result of so many good singers with similar styles and likable personalities.

The judges put her through to the top 24.
If you recall the "Hollywood" shows, where they cut down the initial large group of "made it to Hollywood" types to the top 24, Antonella was the last woman to get through. There was her and one other youngish woman who looked very similar (though not as flashy) to Antonella. The other girl was, based on what we saw on TV, a better singer. Antonella did not perform very well in Hollywood and even forgot some words, which is supposedly a kiss of death at that level.
But the judges chose Antonella. Hmmmm, wonder why. It's all about the singing. Ratings never play into this I'm certain.
One thing that strikes me is how much Sabrina looks like a young version of Gloria Estephan (sp?). And given that no Latino female has yet to win this thing, don't be surprised to see her stick around as long as she keep her prefortmances good.
I really hope there are no surprises and the poorest male and female singers are cast away this evening.
Faith, I don't think size has much to do with anything anymore. I mean Jennifer Hudson, who was my favorite the season Fantasia won, has earned all kinds of awards this past year. Plus, as past seasons have dictated, the top 4-5 always get recording contracts and deals. If one makes it that far, there are no losers really.
I was very disappointed in Simon for putting through the girls who "looked the part" this year - and that last girl choice where they chose Antonella over the other girl who was a much better singer almost made me not watch this season. Antonella should have been sent home during her group project.
I cannot, cannot, CANNOT wait to see Antonella get thrown off this show. I've disliked her, her snotty little friend, and her extraordinarily mediocre voice for weeks, and if she goes tonight I'll do the happy dance all over my house when she sings her good-bye.
(Whew. I feel better now.)
For the guys, I'm sooo ready for Beat Box Boy and Phil to go, it's sad, but I suspect Sanjaya will go instead of Blake. He really put a hurtin' on that John Mayer song. I'm hoping Sundance and Brandon stay in, don't much care about the rest.
My God. I can't believe it. I just wrote a whole honkin' long comment about American Idol.
For the men, Chris and Blake are the clear front runners here. The others were very mediocre.
I think Melinda and Lakisha are amazing and for the guys I really like Blake - it's nice to hear some reggae sounds on AI. I like Chris Richardson as well. The others are very mediocre.
Unfortunately for Haley (who seems like a nice person) she now has to get lumped in with Sanjaya into the "obviously should not still be on the show" category, which the judges seem to use as their license to be incredibly cruel.
I think Haley's not really that bad, so maybe she'll step it up and beat out some of the less talented guys.
Unfortunately for him, he has no sense of his own strong points and that led him to choose horrible songs. "Jeremy," the Pearl Jam song that Sundance sang this week, is a great song. BUT Sundance couldn't sing it AT ALL and it sounded horrible.
I think Sundance was, frankly, really stupid not to just stick to straightforward stuff like Mustang Sally or whatever. His voice and personality would have carried him into the Top 12 and, at that point, the contestants start getting alot more direction over what songs to sing.
One more thing, what's up with Sanjaya's hair during his performance. No way should a guy be using a flat iron on his hair. That was a little weird.
Did his hula dancing strike you as normal? What about his outfit from last week?
Yep, I felt bad for Sundance but he has been terribly inconsistent. I wouldn't sign him (in that studio I plan to own in my next life). I am not disappointed to see Sanjaya hang on because he has improved each week. In my opinion, that counts for the same number of points I would deduct for Sundance's inconsistency.
