As some of you may know, I managed to get the car stuck in the mud the other day. It was a great opportunity to take some photos of the horses. Many of you have met them all through other photos and essays that have been posted, so I hope you will indulge me while I present yet another article with images of my equine friends.
This is Poesia. She came to live with my partner when she was 6 months old. She is now almost 18. The two of them share a sweet friendship, and understanding of each other. Poesia is the lead mare, and the other horses look to her for guidance in all sorts of situations.

Sonata is Poesia's daughter. She was intially sold as a weanling, but the people who bought her did not work with her and so she became impossible to catch. As a result, she was not taken care of properly and so we took her back. It has taken more than a year, but she is now a healthy horse who can be haltered and worked with out in the pasture. And she is my sweetheart.

Anastacia came to us last July. She will be two in May, and has a very laidback personality. She does not get riled easily, and is endlessly curious. When the farrier comes out to trim the horses hooves, we have to keep Anastacia out of the way or she will nibble on his shirt and generally get in the way, just like any other little kid.

Favorito came at the same time as Anastacia, and turned two this month. He is a little more high strung, and there is nothing that calms him down faster than my partner Deb singing to him. Those two have developed a strong bond, and he responds to her very well.

He is on the verge of coming into his stallion-ness, and so is exhibiting the appropriate behavior, though on occasion it can be misguided. Here he is challenging the car that became stuck in the mud.

It is breathtaking to watch him, such presence!

Anastacia seems to have a model's good looks, especially when that wind blown mane thing is happening.

The girls spend a lot of time together, especially Sonata and Anastacia. They can usually be found grazing close by each other.

Poesia on the other hand, tends to hang close to Favorito despite the fact that there is a fence line between them. She is a wise old girl, and knows it makes him feel more secure to have her close by. Besides, we think she has a thing for the younger males - and who can blame her? Favorito is one good looking guy.

Hopefully, we will be able to breed Poesia and Sonata to Favorito this year. It would be Sonata's first even though she is 6 years old. And it may very well be Poesia's last as she is getting on it years. Anastacia is still too young and so we will wait until next year to breed her. Hopefully she and Favorito will have a long and productive life together.

Thanks for indulging us, I was hoping to get to see the fruit of the mud mishap labors.
You are lucky to have such beautiful friends.
Namaste, Wayne
There is so much personality in this herd that I could write a series of articles about it all. Hmmm, maybe sometime I will. They are fascinating to watch, and they really do take care of each other. Currently Sonata is put up as she can't be on the pasture. The other girls (Poesia and Anastacia) tend to split their time between keeping her company and also spending time close to Favorito. There is a hotwire on the fence between the two pastures but he still enjoys having them close.
Anastacia has to win the award for the funniest horse - and she can be quite a pest! We've learned to put her up in the pen if anyone is coming to do anything as she will always get in the middle of things.
Favorito is the least confident and can get pretty spooky with new experiences. He has an amazing relationship with Deb though and will trust her to guide him through things. We think the trust was developed when the kids first came to us. It was right around July 4th. Since fireworks are legal in this state and everyone shoots them off in the more rural areas, we decided we needed to stay with the horses. Deb hung out with Favorito and sang to him for hours. I stayed out with the mares and was really not needed as Poesia had things completely under control. Anyway, Favorito practically fell asleep with his head resting against Deb. Ever since, all she has to do is start singing to him and he visibly relaxes.
I could go on and on as they are just fascinating. We constantly see so many little ways that they interact on quite complex levels. Now, I'd love to hear more about your kids.
