Today I took a walk in a local park and came across these marvelous blooms. Since I did not plant them I would be remiss in confidently identifying them as Helleborus Orientalis - also known as the Lenten Rose, but that is what I believe to be the variety. This plant was given its name as it tends to bloom during Lent. It can be grown in zones 4 through 7.

This is a perennial that grows well in shade or partial shade, and not only has an unusual and early bloom, but also has lush foliage that will last through the year, and has the added bonus of being distasteful to deer.
The colors range from white to green to pink and beyond (I have seen deep mauve, a very eye-catching bloom). The green is undoubtably my favorite. If you have the room to add this plant to your garden, it will not disappoint.

Beryl, I don't know if this zone 4 plant can withstand the zone 3 winters you enjoy, but you could try it. It might work if you mulch it heavily and if the weather cooperates.
Mariana - The most I know is that you would buy the potted plant at a garden center. There are all sorts of online sellers as well if you are looking for the more unusual hybrids.
Ann - yes, spring really is coming.
Dorothy - perhaps Auntie will come back and answer that question for you - I am not familiar with the how the zones run in Minnesota -- though in general, large cities do tend to become micro-climates and are slightly warmer than the surrounding areas.
