Last Thursday, the “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” television show presented a new home to Gene Westbrook, a former Army staff sergeant and a disabled Iraq war veteran. More than 2,000 people, including Lt. Gov. Jari Askins, witnessed the unveiling of the home.
Gene Westbrooks’ old home was demolished Feb. 17 to make way for a new $600,000 home. While the home was being built, the family went on a vacation at an Alabama resort that specializes in handicap accessibility.
Gene Westbrook suffered a severed vertebrae during an enemy attack in Iraq three years ago. Then in June 2006, an automobile accident left the Westbrooks’ son, James, 9, paralyzed below the hip.
Mitchell said more than 24,000 signatures were gathered in the community in support of the Westbrook family being chosen for the show. ABC will air the show April 8.

This show has brought my wife and I to tears (of happiness) many times.
This is awesome!
I loved Ty when he was on Trading Spaces, now that he's moved on to this show, I have nothing but the utmost respect for the man.
Love the show but can't always watch it! I enjoyed the article because sadly I missed this showing. I thank you very much for your work on this article and the hope that it gives us. I just wished that no one coming back from Iraq in any condition would have to have things bad in any means. I feel that there is aways more that can be done by just everyone when it comes to helping out those that serve our great country.
Thank you again for the article.
