A FUTURE DISASTER RECOVERY MEETING
The time is in the future and a hurricane has hit the gulf coast. The damage is extensive and it could take years to bring the area back to normal. Some areas of Katrina back in 2005 are still not repaired so people can move back to the city. This time the hurricane misses New Orleans, and hits another city.
RECOVERY TEAM
This team is composed of hand-picked people from each of the major groups that are working on the recovery. The heads of each department are not included so they can maintain control of both the normal and disaster recovery problems. These team members, all department managers, have been relieved from their normal duties to report to the mayor that is the head of the disaster team.
The recovery team has been busy at work for one week and the Mayor is getting an update on the progress. He is talking now and we are listening in:
"This meeting will now come to order. You all know why we are here and I expect most of you are already performing your assigned tasks per our disaster plan. This time we were hit much harder then anyone believed possible but with some stretching, I believe our new plan will see us through." How is the police department coming along?"
POLICE DEPARTMENT
"Your Honor, the police department is right on schedule. Our size cannot handle this large of a storm, so requests have already been placed with the state police for their help. They have been fast responding, and we have also been offered help from other cities outside the storm area. In fact, the response has been overwhelming to date. All our command units are in place and the units sent outside the disaster area are being moved back inside our area to their assigned places. All units have been placed under the disaster communications frequency including the Federal, State forces, and cities that are helping. Everyone in the disaster area should have no problems in communication. The patrol units are all in place and maintaining order plus looking out for looters and arsonist along with the fire department. No one has had to fire a weapon to date, as most survivors are glad to come along to the villages that have been provided for them. One small band of looters that were taking lectronics were apprehended, and according to our plan, we just asked them to come with us to the villages where none of the things they had could be used. They agreed to come but insisted on carrying their loot with them. Upon reaching the village, they saw that the loot would be of no use to them and gave it up for our storage. We are keeping an eye on them so they cannot cause problems inside the village. So far, everything is proceeding as planned. The village area is well patrolled and guarded. People are roaming about each village without any problems that we can notice. Our heavy presence helps eliminate any fears that they may have walking where they need to go. The small police station is well advertised and noticeable so anyone wanting our help can find us easily. We are also maintaining a drug and alcohol-free village environment as per the plan in the survivor's areas, but have relaxed this for beer and wine only, in the small volunteer village. These people have come to help us and we don't want to make them feel unwelcome. This really is no problem as many of these people are from church related groups that are non-drinkers. "
"What about the fire department? Are you able to maintain the plan?" asks the mayor.

I have lived in the county all my life and it has helped me understand the meaning of being prepared.
By the way I lived in a small town and belonged to the Fire Departments from the time I was in high school. I was small but was able to hold that hose because they trained me. When the fire horn sounded, many of us would leave school to fight the fire. I also lived near a large forest, and spent many hours fighting fires or searching for people when I was in high school. Small town folks care for each other.
great leader young man, and a doer of many things. I too am a member of
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. I do believe we all should be
prepared for the unknown. Because one never knows when disaster will strike.
I know that we have young Elders, Brothers and who ever is willing to lend their
" Helping Hands ". This is the group from our Church. They wear tee shirts with
that saying printed on them. They are led by the strong compelling force of our
Heavely Father, to do good for their fellow man. Keep up the good work Lee.
