Two plain facts come out of this attack:
1. Most of the victims were Afghan, not American.
2. After the attack, Dick Cheney flew away.
We here in the United States often focus on our own nation's suffering as a result of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, but the truth is that we are not bearing the brunt of the suffering. Most of those who have been killed, most of those who have been wounded, and most of those who have had their lives wrecked by these wars are from Afghanistan and Iraq, not from the United States.
Dick Cheney can fly away from the wars when things get rough, but the Afghan people that Cheney left behind have no escape. The American soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan could be pulled out of those countries, if only the American government could stop being so pig-headedly stubborn in its refusal to admit that the continued American presence in those nations is only making the suffering there worse. The Afghans and Iraqis, however, will be dealing with the consequences of our ill-conceived wars for many years after the Americans finally leave.
Next time, let's say no to the foolishness of war before it has begun, not after years of failure and misery have proved it's lack of worth.
