The Oscars are well behind us, but people still seem to be focused on them. It's one thing for the winners to still be carrying their statues around with them, but it looks like the red carpet remains on the tips of peoples' tongues everywhere. I guess that's what happens when you have a billion viewers.
So, while we're at the movies, what is your favorite film? What do you believe is the greatest movie ever made?

Greatest movie? Not sure - I would have different answers based on different categories (i.e., comedy, drama, etc.)
Mermaids with Cher
City of Angels
Out of Africa
Lovesome Dove
Too many to decide
My faves:
A Christmas Story
Hannah and Her Sisters
Goodfellas
The Silence of the Lambs
Diner
Annie Hall
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
Tootsie
O Brother, Where Art Thou?
L.A. Confidential
The Graduate
A Room With A View
Romeo and Juliet (1968)
Best ever: Gone With The Wind
Maltese Falcon
To Kill a Mockingbird
The Birds
Jaws
As for best ever, for me personally would be American Graffitti, because it portrays my California high school experience to a T.
"Citizen Kane" 1939 The most influential film of any time. Every film since has been shaped by this movie.
Films I'd nominater for Best Film Ever would include:
The Man Who Would Be King
Babette's Feast
Bridge on the River Kwai
A Matter of Life and Death (US title usually Stairway to Heaven)
I have a couple nominees:
Shawshank Redemption
To Kill a Mockingbird
I'm also featuring this article on Coffee Klatsch - thanks for starting it. I like seeing what others consider the best movies ever.
Mitch, whichever you'd like to share. Your favorite movie, the movie you think is the best ever made, or just some of your favorites that come to mind.
The ten Commandments- epic in all senses
Willy Wonka and the chocolate factory- great social commentary on the sins of man
The Little Tramp- Charlie Chaplins Masterpiece, every emotion possible
Star Wars- it created a genre
Favorites (because there's no way I can narrow it to one): Reservoir Dogs, The Green Mile, Thelma and Louise, Lady and the Tramp, Finding Nemo, Pulp Fiction, Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid.
"Scoundrels" stars Micheal Cain opposite one my favourite funny guys, Steve Martin. Hysterical hyjinx! as Martin and Cain hustle, and get hustled, on the French Riviera. A buffet of comedy genres - setups, sight gags, slapstick, irony, satire - The Scoundrels even leave you with a huge smile as they get their come-uppence. And since almost every character in the movie is tainted, crooked, or underhanded in some fashion, you have no choice but to root for a bad guy! Cain and Martin work well together and I wish they would team up again.
Casa Blanca
followed by Fried Green Tomatoes
and then
Down by Law (for the excellent and arty cinematography)...I can't think too long and hard on this - these are off the top of my head! Salud.
" The Sound of Music " A Few Good Men " " Little Women " "Fiddler on the Roof" " Step Mom " " A Time to Kill " "Pride and Prejudice " with Colin Firth are a few of my favorites !
Benny and June - Johnny Depp
Misery - Stephen King
The Great Escape
Anything with Nicholas Cage
Star Wars
Dirty Dancing
and my personal favorite,
Arsenic and Old Lace
Apollo 13 - because I remember it, and I remember it just like that... I saw Walter Cronkite make those news reports.
Gone With the Wind
The entire 3-part Lord of the Rings trilogy, but the EXTENDED VERSION on DVD only. The theatrical release version was a travesty that should have been called "Lord of the Arwen" for all that Liv Tyler must have done to get her part "juiced up" the way it was.
I love the B-movies of many genres. The movies that most people are embarassed to admit to liking. For years the Star Wars movies fell into that category it seems. Now, (I shudder) they are nearly mainstream.
I do agree that favorites depend on mood and genre but here are a few of my faves:
Tremors
Serenity
Breakfast at Tiffanys (Not a B-Movie, but who can resist it?)
Army of Darkness
Slither
Snakes On A Plane
Killer Klowns from Outer Space
Any of the old Jackie Chan movies
You get the idea.
Namaste, Wayne
My top favorites:
Singin' in the Rain ( this is my top pick, the one I watch when I'm depressed or lonely. 'Cause wow, Gene Kelly, a manly man who can dance! Gotta love that.)
Victor/Victoria (another musical, ok ok, get off my back about it)
Strictly Ballroom (more dancing...why? Ugly duckling story)
Lost Boys (hot vampire boys, yummy)
Pitch Black (unexpectedly good sleeper)
"Silence of the Lambs"
"Ragtime"
"Road to Perdition"
"The Godfater"
"Logan's Run"
and many many more.....................!
The Usual Suspects
Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are Dead
The Princess Bride
La Vita Bella
What the Bleep do we Know?
Casablanca
The Royal Tenenbaums
Legend of the Drunken Master
city of angels
benny and joon (johnny depp)
pirates (johnny depp)
ghost rider (the new one)
constintine
saw 1,2
the green mile
The best ever made? Wow.. I'd have to say Gone With The Wind
