Has Peanut butter made you sick?

I just wanted to let those know that do not already know that you need to check your peanut butter to make sure you do not have any that have been contaminated with Saminella...
Jacob has been sick the past 2 weeks with pukes and runs and the doc says that she thinks he may have eaten some peanut butter either at home or somewhere that was tainted.
The peanut butter affected is "Peter Pan" and "Great Value".  They both will have the code with 2111 on them.  If you have any, they need to be discarded immediately. 
Symptoms are:
  • Onset of diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps 12-72 hours after infection.
  • Illness lasts 4-7 days (my doc said that it can recycle itself so as the person seems to feel better, they start it all over again.)
  • Most persons recover without treatment.
I just wanted to let you all know and to have you all check your cupboards for those 2 kinds of peanut butter...  According to the CDC, these products have caused problems in almost all the states here in the US.  Only 5 states do not have reported cases of this poisoning.
Our doc said that there is nothing you can really do if you get it, but to let it run its course unless you become dehydrated or get a secondary infection from it.

Yeah.. searching through the house, we did not have any of those brands, but he must have eaten it from somewhere.

i dont usually buy that brand, but for some reason a few weeks ago, i did. When i heard about the recall, I looked in my cabinet and i had the EXACT brand that was making people sick. Luckily, it happened been opened yet. Thank god, my babies didn't eat it.

I had a jar of this and it was about 2/3 full. I suppose we were lucky that we were not affected. I just threw it out.

You are lucky Nana... The worst scary thing about this is that if someone wanted to taint our food supply.. that would be the easiest way to get at more people than you can think of in regards to terrorism...

Trish, I'm also sorry to hear Jacob is ill but glad you shared this story with the rest of us...that Great Value peanut butter is a Walmart brand and our food bank had to throw out some 3 cases...I'm just praying that none of our homeless people have gotten sick from the stuff before the word went out.

Yep, we had a jar with the 2111 number on it. It figures, they had Peter Pan pb on sale here for 1.98 a jar, I think everyone bought at least one jar. We had eaten 1/2 of it though and no one in my household got sick thankfully!

I just hope that for those that did not hear it on the news now know about it... remember to check when you visit someone too...

I see that my article posted twice... I tried to do it once and then it did not show that it had posted... but i guess it did..

Thanks! My daughter called me from college after she learned about the peanut butter scare. Apparently, Peter Pan peanut butter with code 2111 may be contaminated. She had already eaten some of her peanut butter(code 211) but did not get sick. It is really scarey. I looked up the broadcast on the internet and they said you could send back your jar and get a refund. Big whoop! After being ill you get your money back. They should think of a better reimbursement.

I wrote a letter to Starkist tuna once after I got a can of bad tuna (Absolutely something you DO NOT want to try) and though I didn't get sick, I had made the mistake of taking a bite of a sandwich and it made me nauseous all day, mainly from the thought. Anyway, they sent me a form to sign so I didn't sue and I got a $20 check and coupons.

$20 doesn't come close to helping those who have gotten sick from contaminated food, but I would definitely write a letter. I hope Jacob recovers soon-that sounds horrible to go through for so long :(

Thanks for all your comments.. we still have not tracked down the jar of peanut butter that contaminated him.... we did have peanuts in the past couple of weeks... wonder if it could have been them?..
