Don't fix it if it ain't broke. Well, I just got the estimate from the repair shop on this one and it's almost a lost cause. Those irritating drive-by 1's, as I've learned they're called here. That's why I HAD to use the same image from my previous article of this morning. It's my tribute to those people...just in case they didn't catch it earlier. (Plus, I hppen to think it's cute in my own warped way.)
Now, I would have been flabbergasted had I been the first to have this happen to on Gather. I was sure many before me have experienced the same thing prior to my arrival. And it's not like I haven't dealt with it myself before this on other sites. There are people on line I've grown to loath and some I have even run to in real life. And I have a tendancy to be somewhat outspoken at times and not afraid to open my mouth and make someone not like me who isn't worth liking themself. My "Part One" was basically putting my two cents in and let them know they can play their childish little game...and when they're done, they can go back and sit at the table with the other little kids and be quiet while the grown ups talk. When they mature, maybe their opinion will matter.
But we all admit there IS a problem here...so instead of giving us all this "new technology", why not take care of an old problem, Gather. Seems like Gather would want to devise a way to protect their people on a practice no one deserves to be subjected to. I mean, I'm no rocket scientist; just one of the experimental chimpanzees they sent into space...borderline dummy. But I wuz thinkin', maw...Why don't they just make use identify ourself when we rate someone. We're all adults here...writing...expressing...getting along. We all have our reasons for the way we vote and should have no problem explaining our opinion. It's not like we're casting our ballot in a national election. If we're really family and friends like we claim, there should be no questions about honesty and integrity and avoid the pettyness, fights and games.
If I deserve a"1", I'll gladly take it because whatever I wrote was total garbage. But I assure you this, and I don't want to make it sound like I'm breaking my arm to pat myself on the back, and you all are really the ones who have the decision that matters on this, but even I consider myself to be a little better than average writer. I didn't say master, but I have to admit, I'd be very disappointed in myself if I ever got below a "6". I'm not expecting a "10" on every rating, though when that happens, it sure is sweet!
And by displaying your rating, it could be picked out immediately when a pattern develops of someone randomly handing out "1's" for no reason in a rash of hit and runs. By keeping track of that person, Gather can determine their actions are unwarranted, they can be removed and the "1" ratings that were handed out by this person can be voided. Sounds pretty simple, I think...and I have nothing against displaying anything. I have nothing to hide.
Since so many have been plagued by this vengeance in the past, here and elsewhere, we're bound and determined to go on, but have any of you ever sat down and thought of a way this can be stopped and not let them get away with their hateful ways? Anyone have any other ideas? Seems if we put our heads together, we can outsmart these clowns...even though anyone with two brains cells has twice as many as they do and it wouldn't, even then, be much of a matchup.
Hmmm...maybe instead of sheriff, I should become head of the Gather Security department. We've come to get you punk...what do you have to say for yourself? Hasta lavista, baby!

This is probably not a realistic option and in that case, Gather should take care of it all behind the scenes. I'm sure there'll always be someone with a vendetta, but somehow it should have been squashed before it got so far out of hand.
Now as for the ones, they give you points. So thank the drive-by raters and wave as they go by.
I don't blame you for the frustration: those who rate unfairly spoil the experience here for any writer. It's true that many have complained, and nothing has resulted.
On the up-side, I hadn't known there was someone from Seneca Falls here, so I'm glad they got you to write this rant, so Melissa commented and caught my attention. So, something good resulted. Just not what you -- and the rest of us -- had hoped for.
Danielle...glad you've been able to visit here and enjoy our wild life...but those are NOT albino deer...they are white deer. the difference being that albino would have pink eyes...and ours have brown. Ours are a genetic mytaion from breeding in a closed in confine behind the fence that ran around the old army depot and kept them isolated for so many years away from others of their species. We have here, by official count, the largest white deer herd in the entire world. And why didn't you stop by for coffee???
eh..you have the idiots who post utter drivel here and they complain about getting low ratings..even starting whole threads about it before they have to take a nap. Does it surprise anyone that nothing has been done to help the people here at Gather who actually take the time to write something that is their own? It shouldn't...As long as the rating are unfair this will never change. As it stands you can post shit that has been all over the Internet and people laud this activity AND get plenty of good ratings because it is cute or patriotic or whatever, yet so many other things fail to get noticed. It should be no great shock that there are plenty of disgruntled people.

I think accountability for your actions is always good, here and in real life. I also do not believe that if there are really random DBR's out there, that they would care whether their name was shown as a 1 rater or not. Even if they did care, they could make fake accounts to pull all the crap that no one wants to put up with.
I'd suggested before that our rating be listed next to our comment.
Rob- when do I start my undersherriff training?
On second thought, maybe it isn't really a drive by because I read the article.
