Some suggestions for the Gather upgrade

I have some suggestions to Gather for their new upgrade

• Make it easier for us to categorize our groups so that when we post we can be sure and not post in groups that we shouldn't. Let us choose food and then see a list of the food groups we've joined.

• Ditch the ratings system, it is used for nothing more than petty vendettas or to lift people up because they are nice. The ratings system has nothing to do with quality. Don't bother with a system for people to explain their ratings. That'll only provide more fuel for the fire the grammar nazi crowd is trying to start.

• Rather than forcing people to report an entire article when some moron who comments can't contain his language, allow people to report individual comments.

I love the improvements Gather has made lately. But I think these one would help. Oh and one more.... I think we need an exorcism tool for certain discussions... I'm just saying....

if its not broken dont fix it you have a choice as to rate or not rate no should take it personally it just the internet

Jimmy I'm not squeeling about low ratings. I'm simply saying that by abolishing the ratings system gather would rid themselves of a lot of squabbles. And for some reason I can't make a smilie face on here today!
It would also be nice if the page would automatically refresh after posting a comment.

Being a new, active member to Gather, you're far more expert on what should and shouldn't be. I'll let pro's like you go to bat...and I'll go with the flow on your improvements.

I agree other than about the rating system. If a name went with a rating, you would definitely see low ratings probably disappear. Of course, they would probably be artificially high, but it's all about the points, aint it?

I liked your first suggestion. I was thinking it would be nice to have all of our groups on one page like we do when we are in the process of publishing something. That way I could check out groups I belong to, but don't publish to with more ease. Second, maybe not do away witht he rating system, but change it to a letter grade. Good stuff A and so forth. I think people trip up with the numbers. People who are likely to give their friends a ten might not feel so free with giving them an A for something they posted that took them two minutes to write. Maybe I'm wrong.

The flagging of content is worse than the ratings. It makes your content disappear for the most part.

I like all of your ideas very much, except I think the idea of having the ratings show up with the persons comments would eliviate a lot of the drive-by 1's and that would be better IMHO!

How about:

  • Reintroduce the "For Me" section. It doesn't have to be prominent, just available.
  • Make the site easier to navigate.
  • More prominently available 'share' link.
  • Restore 'subscriptions', with a way for those being subscribed to find out who their subscribers are. Right now, we do have 'friends', but not everyone accepts 'friend' requests.
  • Make the page layout more aesthetically pleasing.
  • Create a page where some outstanding posts, images and videos could be found, chosen by an official moderator, as encouragement to produce better content. Inclusion therein might also be accompanied by bonus Gather Points™. This would be similar to the former Gather home page.


I'll probable think of more stuff later on.

Your first suggestion is vital!!!!! The group selection process is time consuming and annoying!
