Fibromyalgia is a Friendship Challenge—and an Opportunity By Elena V. Gonzales, Ph.D.

I receive the Fibromyalgia Association newsletter and this article was in the current issue. This topic has been a big challenge to me because I have fibromyalgia too. So many times, when someone asks how I am doing, I too answer "I'm fine". My ears might be ringing from lack of restorative sleep, and have to save up all day to have the energy just to cook dinner, but the short answer is much easier than stating the truth.
I might be out shopping when a bout of muscle spasms in my back cuts that excursion short. My friends have a hard time understanding why we must go home NOW.
Now if I could just get my friends to understand I am not abusing the system when I want to use my parking permit. ::big sigh:::

As far as the parking permit goes...I understand that, too. I carry one in my glovebox for when I'm out with my father. While he's elderly, he looks pretty darn good on the outside. Inside, he's loaded with cardiac problems and walking great distances isn't always in his best interest. (On good days, we don't use it. The exercise is helpful, then.) People need to learn to understand that not all physical handicaps are visible.
