One of the things I've found very beneficial to my writing is the chance to get away from the distractions of home (let's see... comic book distractions, trading card distractions, housework distractions, internet distractions, and let's not forget distractions of the feline variety!). Since the summer, Gynn and I have been going to Borders in Hyannis MA once a week to hang out in the cafe and write/draw. Well, I write. Gynn writes/draws.
This started as just the two of us, but when Nanowrimo season rolled around, we met three other writers and our weekly session has become an informal writers' group. It keeps threatening to become a formal one. We'll see. We've started doing a little bit of critiquing. I also usually read and review a couple of comics while I'm there, and we enjoy tea and cookies from the cafe.
Tuesday nights are also chess club nights at Borders, which adds to the general nerdy ambiance of the scene. We've even observed some other writers doing critique sessions there on occasion.
Borders is a nice setting because you can always get up and walk around, browsing through the books if you get a bit of writers' block. And of course there's a decent selection of reference material.
I have a friend who does a weekly writing session on Sundays at a coffee shop she goes to in Los Angeles, and she invites online friends to join in for a virtual session, so I am offering the same here.
If you're doing some writing tonight, drop a comment to say hi and let your fellow writers know what you're working on.
I think tonight I will be trying some poetry. I haven't really put much effort into poetry recently and I need to get back into the swing of writing poems regularly.
Goal: Two poems and at least one comic review.
Good writing, everyone!
