My Favorite Top Horror Movies of All Time

It's funny how many horror films were made when I was growing up.  I have to laugh when I think that I was really quite young when I saw a few of these classic 70's and 80's horror films.  I have to wonder how I convinced my parents to let me watch some of them??

I purposely focused on movies that made me scream, shiver, and hide under my blankets after I saw them for the first time.  I would post directly, but it's published on AC exclusively so I'm adding the link.  Tell me what your favorites are if you get a chance to view my list.

Good article, as usual. I grew up in the age of "Friday the 13th" and "Nightmare on Elm Street."

Thanks! I like those too-by then it took quite a bit to scare me after watching the earlier ones the way some kids watch Barney :)

Great list. The Exorcist was really a freaky movie for me. At some point the priests are talking to Regan while she is in bed and she rolls her eyes and speaks (or the devil speaks in his baritone voice) "We have the girl now". That was it for me. I needed some lights on at night for awhile! I would have to put "Halloween" on your list. One of my favs!

I guess "Rosemary's Baby" (along with several dozen 'truly classic' movies) was "before your time". LOL

I still think that "The Exorcist" is the standard by which all others are measured.

I remember seeing the movie in the theater -- after having read the book. That night, the Philly area had a very mild earthquake (actually just tremors). It woke my brother up. Fortunately, I slept through it or I would have really freaked out if I woke up while the bed was shaking!

The Shining, Jaws, yes these were indeed scary. However, I also believe Suspiria, Let's scare Jessica to death, Nightmare on Elm Street, were great for the 70s and 80s. Cool, another horror fan.

It's not a movie, but when we weren't monitored we watched Dark Shadows growing up. I don't think it was actually scary, but we thought it was because of all the buildup in not being allowed to watch it.

I agree that The Exorcist is the creepiest movie out there. The book was a great read, too.

I see that there are a few more that I may have forgotten about-probably blocked out the fear attached to a few of the movies mentioned ;) lol

I do love to rent a bunch of these around October-it just seems scarier during the Halloween season

Andy ... there actually was a Dark Shadows movie. Most of it didn't live up to the show's standards, but the ending was awesome!

Oh, you struck a nerve with me! I had a girlfriend when I was 18/19 that was into the screamers of the late seventies. Anything with Jamie Lee Curtis was a must. We'd always be heading for the drive in on Friday nights after work for any and all horror flicks.

I probably would have married that girlfriend if I had not met her mother AAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I never did see the Exorcist, probably one of the few my age that haven't. Like Mary, I have a hard time with horror.

The "cut and slash" movies like Hallowe'en and Friday the 13th were all pretty cheesy.

I'm with you on the Shining. That one still gets my goat. The other is the original halloween with Jamie Lee Curtis. I saw it in a theatre when I was like 11 years old and walked out and waited in the lobby after the first killing. It still scares the crap out of me. It's not the blood, gore or suspense....it's the music. Fills me with horror when I hear it.
