John, there might still be records available, even though many court houses were burned during the Civil War era. Things like church records, voting records, and land plats are sometimes available in certain areas of the country. Depending on where you live right now, you might check to see if your local library has a genealogy section. Many times, if there is a good genealogy section, there are volunteers who come in during the week to help people who are just beginning to research their family history.

Vickey, I agree. There is no genealogical thrill to compare with finding that "lost" record, or a new cousin. One of the biggest thrills though, is to find a cousin who has pictures of your ancestors and is willing to share. I do a big 'ol happy dance when that happens!
