A revisit to Liberal?----Conservative? I have a question that has plagued me for some time now. Can anyone explain to me the difference between liberal (left) and conservative (right) as it was and as it is today? It seems to me that somewhere during the passing of time that the “NEO-CONs” have proposed the idea, that politically speaking, right is right and left is wrong. I imagine that the “NEO-CONS” believe this because that is the way of the egotistical rich. Actually they believe that only they have the right to be wealthy. Factually, the reason has nothing at all to do with philosophy, only a choice of seats. In the early days of democracy in Europe the liberals set to the presiding officer’s left in a deliberative assembly? Of course the conservatives set to the right. Doesn’t that make you wonder what the ramifications might have been if the seating had been reversed. Therefore if a line is drawn in the sand and both political parties are lined up on their appropriate side then the distance from that line that each members of either party moves, the more radical they become. With all of that in mind and observing the qualities below, where in the scheme of thing do you fit, remembering that Red is Conservative and Blue is Liberal.
Maintain, Preserve, Save, Retain, Keep, Guard, Protect, Ample, Bountiful, Broadminded, Extensive, Extravagant, Free, Generous, Large,Lavish, Lenient, Magnanimous, Nobel Minded, Prodigal, Profuse, Tolerant,Unselfish. If you are true to yourself I believe that all of us, as Americans, would like believe that we possess most of these values, both the RED and the BLUE, some more than others and I suppose that is the real divide. However it seems to me that the neo-cons tend to think of themselves in conjunction with the blue tributes as to what they do with their wealth by making donations instead of letting the working class prosper.
Back to that line in the sand to compare philosophy; Conservatism, a disposition in politics to preserve what has been established and a political philosophy based on tradition and social stability, stressing established institutions and preferring gradual development to abrupt changes, a preference to an existing situation instead of change. Liberalism; a theory in economics that emphasizes individual freedom from restraint and is usually based on free competition, a self-regulating market and the gold standard, a political philosophy based on a belief in progress, the essential goodness of man and the autonomy of the individual and standing for the protection of political and civil liberties. Now let’s put these philosophies together for the sake of history and I will repeat myself. As with the values I do believe that the philosophies of both the liberals and conservative that are listed above are philosophies that we all believe ourselves to have, maybe some more that other, and again that may well be the divide.
Of course the thing that makes America the greatest nation that has ever been is the ability of those that are elected to represent their constituency by working on both side of that line, middle of the road you might say or centrist as others proclaim, but either I believe that it comes down to a moderation and blinding of all of the characteristics that are listed in red and blue above and by not drifting to far from the center enough to keep all Americans reasonable happy and our nation united. However we have very bothersome enemy that is eating at our political stability and that enemy is the news media. A single word is uttered and the airwaves are cluttered with a vast network of harmful gossip that really dose nobody any good. Not only is the gossip often malicious but the news media think that they know best and move people back and forth across that defining line to suit themselves. However that is not the troublesome part, but attempting to assign someone’s patriotism or belief in God by that same news media’s attempt at tagging everything, is.
In the past it was the philosophy that allowed people to make their choice however I believe that with the passing of time and the self-serving “NEOCON” influence some of the choices that we now make are based on selfishness and greed, with our national pride often being replaced with a selfish arrogance. Actually, I believe that it takes both sides to move forward with a diligence and forethought that is necessary to become the great nation that we are. Therefore it behooves us to remember this and realize that we must get along together to keep America strong. Besides there are so many more things that have the United States in trouble other than trying to define the difference between left and right, that it is stupid. But after all is said and done the news media’s insistence on labeling everything is helping split the nation apart!

Focusing on the current (and these are only tendencies, not rules), a liberal tends to think that government involvement is helpful if not actually critical in addressing society's problems.
By comparison, conservatives tend to put more decision making authority and responsibility in individuals, and less emphasis on government solutions, higher taxes ("We know better than you how to spend your money"). Hence, the classification of private sector individuals typically as conservatives and/or Republicans, and public sector employees typically as liberals and/or Democrats.
I hope that helps. Feel free to e-mail me if you like.
My brother used to say that liberals understood government and how to work with it effectively and conservatives didn't understand and therefore didn't trust government at all so desired less of it if possible.
However, I think the current political climate has taken ideological excesses to the ultimate and thrown the actual definitions so articulately delineated by T Leon D into a cocked hat!
Good writing T. Leon.

There are many things wrong on both sides the only real difference is one side favors God as the leader and the other man. You guess which is which.
