The choice of faith is the thread that runs throughout the latest installment in a series of inspirational writings by author Oluwadahunsi. My Book of Life, A Companion Piece: Testament (Pictures & Words) consists of affirmations, scripture, and vignettes that challenge views of God, faith, and what can be expected from both.
Many of the concepts on spirituality the author presents are familiar and speak to the basic foundation of faith: “Ask and receive, seek and find, knock and it will be opened (p.17).” Faith is expressed as a fluid, continuous practice, not a stagnant ritual with rigid lines providing absolutes. The author offers comforting words to cope with fear and suffering in a world where such things cannot be avoided because “it’s where choice exists.” Oluwadahunsi also addresses our human and divine dichotomy with passages that instruct on the care and nurturing of the soul in spite of the failings of the flesh.
The vignettes act as reminders of lessons many people learned as children about being grateful and open to life’s blessings. In “A Tale of Two Sillies” the old adage “be careful what you wish for” is illustrated as characters covet their neighbors’ possessions with disastrous results. The theme of “Grace” is learning the skill of abandoning our fears and desires to faith and being open when prayers are answered.
As with the other books in this series, My Book of Life, A Companion Piece: Testament is illustrated with pictures of nature that complement the spiritual context of the work. Most of the entries are sparse and can be read in conjunction with the Bible or simply enjoyed alone as a support in faith building. Oluwadahunsi, in his focus on the choice of faith, teaches and guides; provides a framework for becoming spiritually centered.
