As I am just new to this group, I thought I would tell you about one of my books. Playing With The Devil is a novel based on a true story about the abuse of 12 children in a Newfoundland family.
The reason I wrote about these horrendous crimes is to make this story more widely known, because the perpetrators, who included prominent local businessmen, church leaders, politicians and even a judge, have never been brought to justice.
The story is told from the viewpoint of the oldest sibling. Today, he is in his ‘50s and a broken man. His entire life has been a quest for justice, but he is near to giving up – not just his quest but also everything in life. He has a wife and son, and still lives in Newfoundland. It is so sad to receive emails from him expressing his total frustration with both the government and the court system.
In 2006, he spent May till August picketing on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada trying to draw attention to his cause. He even displayed signs revealing the true names of some of the perpetrators. He also names countless people on his website, which you can access through my site on the book at: http://www.angelfire.com/planet/pwtd.
Here is the opening Prologue from Playing With The Devil:
What you are about to read will likely horrify and stun you beyond words. While it is presented here as fiction, this story is actually based on true events that occurred within a family of 12 children in Grand Bank, Newfoundland in the 1960s.
You will find that this is written in a rather graphic nature, but there is no other way to relate the truth about what happened to these children in any other way. If you are sensitive or have a weak stomach, I would suggest that you put this book down right now. It is not for the faint of heart and was most difficult for me to write. However, this story needs to be told. Canadians must know how politics and business played a huge role in the abuse of so many young souls, who today are very confused adults. Needless to say, this book is rated "R." Please note that the names of the victims have been changed to protect their privacy. Unfortunately, the names of the guilty had to be withheld as well. May they some day pay for their horrendous and unforgivable deeds and for those who have left this world, may Gob exact His judgment.
Playing With The Devil is now available at Saga Books: http://www.sagabooks.net as well as http://www.amazon.com.

I, like Byron, love my parents, but hate the way I was treated. My family was the typical middle class suburban family and everyone believed that my parents could never be like that, they were so nice, outstanding people in the neighborhood. My own experience was not as extensive as theirs Thank God, but I do understand how they feel. And I, for one, KNOW it is for real. It takes many, many years to get over the abuse, but you can. I did. With the help of many good people, patience and a lot of love from outside people.
I learned to separate my love for my parents from their actions. I love them, I hate what they did. I have moved on with my life. I took all the good parts (memories) and kept them and threw the bad ones away.
God, man, this is hard for me to write (even after 30 years and my mom passing on).
No one knows why people break down on a fundamental level like his mom did, but it happens and I feel sorry for their children. So, by you writing this book and people reading it, maybe the other people who can do something about it will open their eyes and stop living with damn blinders on. These children are screaming for help and for Justice. It's about time they get IT !!!

I know and I understand what Byron went through. He tried to take care of them and him. It is tooo much for anyone to take, let alone a young child. The horror and the helplessness is too much. And no one listening or helping is more than you can take.
I will go back to his website and will check out the references you posted for Carolyn, but not tonight. I can only take a little of this at a time.
But, I can and will say that I am a much stronger person today, because I did get support, even if I was an adult when I did.
Thank you again and I will keep Byron and his siblings in my prayers.
Is any of the proceeds going to him, his family, or to charities? Just curious.
Carolyn: In this case, I forgive you! In fact, I've said it myself more than once.
"Is there currently any type of e-mail or letter writing campaign?"
If you go to my site at: http://www.angelfire.com/planet/pwtd you will notice that Byron asks people to write to the prime minister directly. Other than that, no.
"I have a friend who does documentaries and is very big on human rights."
There is nothing I would like to see more than a film about what happened to these children, so the story could be told to a much wider audience. I wanted to do this with my book. If you could talk to your friend, that would be wonderful!
"Also, when did he go to Ottawa, before or after the Conservatives came to power?"
Byron was in Ottawa at Parliament Hill from May to August 2006, which is after the Conservatives came into power.
"Finally, did he approach W5?"
I don't know. However, I do know that he contacted a wide range of media outlets and it may very well have been one of them.
