Thank you M. Jette. My 10-year-old friend Polly helped me stir up the "caramel" that goes at the bottom of the pan, and was so impressed that I knew that sugar and butter make caramel. (She said I was "so smart.") Then she proceeded to make more caramel to add to some instant chocolate pudding she was making, while my two-year-old friend Bella helped drop the maraschino cherries into the pineapple middles. We also added cherries anywhere there was a spot not filled with caramel. The cake turned out beautifully, and was loved by all. I added a little bit of molasses to the batter, which gave it a nice richness, and a little extra molasses to the brown sugar "caramel." Truly a kid-friendly recipe!

Sidenote: The whole pineapple upside down cake adventure started when Polly gave me this riddle: "What has a bottom at its top?" My answer... you guessed it. The real answer? I'll post it in a little bit.
