Paul Simon kicked off his 2006 Surprise tour in Columbus, Ohio last summer, and I was there, front row, center stage. It was the first time I've been that close to such a huge, iconic musician, making eye contact as he sang, actually getting to shake his hand as the crowd cheered.
The next day, I went to Cleveland (not Graceland), where Paul continued his tour in the hometown of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I scored second row seats for that show.
Why am I sharing this with you now? Because I’m listening to his new Surprise album for the first time since shortly after the concert and I’m reminded of what a great experience that summertime pilgrimage was, driving from the east coast to America’s heartland to see one of the musicians of America’s heart. The new album certainly does have a summery feel to it – and it is a surprise to anyone who knows his work. Or perhaps not, since he is a musician who often releases albums with entirely new sounds.
Despite Simon’s knack for surrounding himself with diversely talented backup musicians, his true talent is in his ability to write poetry. And after fifty years of writing and composing, his voice remains fresh. He still has something to say.

One of my best friends gave my the Surprise CD as a new-baby gift. I used the Father & Daughter song for a gift to my husband for Christmas.
I AM SO JEALOUS!!
What an amazing resource! I'll relive the concert ... again!
Kathy, you did miss a great show. But thanks to Mitch, now you can enjoy it too!
I got the Surprise album as a father's day gift. Nice, since one of the songs on it is Father & Daughter, which my own 8-year-old daughter sings along with.
