I grew up never really very far from the ocean .After all Nova Scotia is an isthmus. But it was not until we moved to Grand Manan Island that I saw the phenomenon of what meteorologists call Sea Smoke .
Sea smoke (arctic sea smoke) Evaporation fog or steam fog which is formed when water vapor is added to air which is much colder than the vapor's source; most commonly, when very cold air drifts across relatively warm water .

Grand Manan is of course not in the Arctic , but we are in the North Atlantic Ocean. Here are some of the pictures that I took today! I would have liked to have gotten a few more and gone for closer shots or more interesting ones but the wind was blowing off the water today. It was far too cold to stand outside taking pictures! I think the temperature was below zero (F) here today and the wind chill factor made it seem that much colder.
In fact we have a wind chill warning in effect.

oregonians think we are such hardy folk, (as in hardy-har-har). we just got over a "cold snap" here in the willamette valley in oregon, and have running water for the first time in two weeks, and think we are intrepid survivors.
