The Adopt a Classroom project for Jolo in Mindanao, Philippines is a joint collaboration between the Muslim Women Coalition, based in New Jersey, and the Asia America Initiative in Washington, D.C. This project is focused in Jolo, Sulu; the most impoverished area in the Philippines, located in Muslim Mindanao and threatened by al-Qaeda terrorists. Sulu ranks at the bottom in all categories of health, education, and employment. It leads the country in infant and child mortality and has a 65 percent school drop-out rate by the 6th grade. Through the Adopt a Classroom project, you can provide basic classroom materials to help deter violence and terrorism through building hope in the community, starting with rebuilding schools and hospitals.
When Director, Al Santoli, first arrived in Sulu province in mid-2002, he found overcrowded schools with 60 to 90 children in windowless classrooms in sweltering tropical heat with no running water or restrooms, practically no textbooks and only 1 chair for every 6 or 7 children. Nurses often do not receive money for salaries or medicine for months and usually have to buy small supplies of aspirins and anti-acids out of their own pocket money. The local hospital, which serves 250,000 people, had less than a half-cabinet of medicines, no electricity, and routinely performed surgery without any type of anesthetic.
Currently, the Asia America Initiative, in partnership with the Muslim Women Coalition is providing direct support for some 25,000 students through more than a dozen schools from the pre-school level to college. Throughout the two years of the program, there have been no acts of terrorism based on religious conflicts. A number of classrooms now have chairs, desks, and even some computers. However, much work is yet to be done.
Your generous support is an inspiration to the children and their families in Jolo, who are looking for a better future filled with happiness instead of violence. Education is the key to their success.

This would be a wonderful project fo a BoyScout Eagle4 project.
Or one for a classrom esp one that has the resources (ie from a wealthy area) and it could be a good project for your Homeschooling, esp the letter writing and life story sharing photos etc. with others to help promot understanding and peace.
I will be looking into how we could send gift cards etc to the organization that may be able to be used over in the Philippines so that the $ on them goes further.
I will NOT be doing a points promotion for this unless it is simply one that has all the writers giving all their points for a specified time to gift cards for this, BUT not loke the past program. Just a volunteer program to secretly give your points to help others... No publicity.
But most of all, it is to give these ppeople and esp the children hope for a better tomarrow and the tools to build that for themselve.
Having worked in refugee camps in Thailand, I can say gifts of paper, crayons, pencils, pictures, and books bring such smile sas we never get to see on the adveriage american childs face... Simple things can help bring profound change when cuppled with education. Thank you for understanding, and bless you for passing on the word to others who can help.
The Director of this Al Santoli is a family friend, and he is all about the children and the poor, and finding ways to pring hope to as many as possible... I thank you for him also.
Robin, Thank you so much... each pencil the beginning of a story, or the beginning of a piece of art... and the beginning of hope in a young ones heart...
Thank you all of you who support this or things like this in the world...
Good things are happening thanks for being a part of that.
I was at work during the program today but I am in touch with them and hope we Gatherites can find ways to help with this or similer programs.
If I can,I wish to someday go help teach in schools such as these.
Great purpose in this article. I will adopt a classroom and hope I can encourage my non-gather friends to join in.
This is a wonderful program and one that is definitely needed. Thanks for writing about it for us :)
