Winter Vacation

Calendar on the wall hangs January

Dresser full of sweaters and warm socks

Heaters silent motionless ceiling fans twirl

Stepping out the creaking back door

Wonderful assault to the senses

A warm breeze and sunshine

Faces lift closing eyes to soak it all in

Wonder what the trees think

As they sway to and fro above

Will they stay in hibernation or begin to grow

Bud and leaf in warm degrees days in a row

Will they risk leaving the cocoon of winter sleep

To stretch their branches in the warm heat

Birds and squirrels in confused glee

Swoop and scamper sing and chatter

Nature tricks us with early spring

Then it comes to freeze again

Baby buds shrivel on frost covered branches

Blooms fall on the ground and brown

The grass was greening from its winter hue

Pungent fresh and new forced again to brown and grey

A little taller than yesterday

The beginning or end... a blessing in winter time

Seasons we can not tell apart... or a sign

Wondering what is next for us... or is it just a new start

Winter returns from a vacation away... is it here to stay

I struggled with this one ... I might still go back and work on it. SIGH... I know what I wanted to write and this is close.

Good poem and very appropriate for our winter this year. Trees budded in the unusually warm New York weather, then we had ice yesterday and now snow again. Winter returned. Who knows, maybe next week will be another January thaw. You captured the idea very well.

Good job, Pam! It is nice to enjoy the warm days in winter, but then you think about global warming and the effects t is having on the earth and it turns something pleasant into a bit scary. This may have been a warm winter, but all our winters recently have been different than what we experienced 20 years ago.

Thank you Theresa, I agree... my husband even more so because he has been grumbling about the weather... he says it isn't right to be warm in January. He is from Winnipeg Canada and before that Europe so he is used to winter's being winter. Not that we don't love the warmth without humidity...its just that you know nature is being tricked when it happens too many days in a row then everything dies again.

I wore capri's and sandals yesterday. Too pale for shorts. ha ha It was mid 70's and today it's rainy with frost coming tonight.

DM, Thank you ... I feel like there are more verses hiding in my mindd... also I rhyme in some places and not in other places... I wasn't trying to rhyme. That is why I put it in the Poetically Incorrect group. ha! I have the heart of a poet but not the talent.

Oh Yeah, Judy, You got warm weather too. We stayed that way for a few weeks ... It was crazy but nice. I didn't suffer any allergy attacks like some did. Last night I went on a walk and I could smell the grass growing and I felt a little sad for it... I wondered what the grass thought of this weather... then the trees... Thus I started thinking of this poem.

Monica, You're right it has been warmer and warmer each year. I don't want to complain when we have 70 degree days... it is so nice out but I wonder what it means also. Looks like we are back to a cold spell... Hope we all don't get sick with all the weather changes!

I never learned the rules of poetry other than haiku and now tanka. I say, break the rules if you need to.

I like it Pam. Isn't there poetry that is called free verse or something? How very true. Our weather keeps changing so much here is it confusing wondering if it's spring, fall or winter. (definitely not summer...brrr)
