Living in the mid west offers a wonderful opportunity to experience odd weather phenoms. Ice storms. Yes, we've had several and more are coming our way. We've had no power since Friday evening and it will be days and maybe longer before it is restored. We stayed the first night in our cold cold house and last night we stayed over at friends. Visited fam last night at my bros house, one of them has power, the rest of the fam is without. I was most concerned about my 90 year old dad who has no power but he is safe at my brothers. It was so strange driving around last night, block after block with no power and the only light at all was our headlights swimming thru the inky blackness. It was an eerie scary experience for me. Intersection after intersection with no lights and some people 'playing nice' and stopping and taking turns and others barreling thru as if no one mattered but them and the mission they were on. Trees are coated with inches of ice, trees are down across roads and we have to turn around and retreat and try to find another road thru, power lines are down across roads but it is safe to drive over them because none of them have power running thru them. More than half of our city is without power, it is hard to find businesses that are open too. Lines at the few that have power are long as people search for gas and food and other necessities. What is strange is the roads are slick, it is pretty safe to drive so far, except for the obstacles and the other crazy drivers. Fun with friends is making the time go by faster. We will go later and check on the cats and my dad and fam. Hope to find somewhere to take a shower soon. Right now we have some warmth, good friends, kids for Z to play with and some hot food. So much nicer than yesterday morning and the cold pop tarts we had for breakfast and the instant coffee B heated up over some gel thing that B bought at walmart that is safe to burn in the house. It is raining again. My friend K is bustling around the house putting candles everywhere, arranging mirrors around them to reflect the light and preparing us for power loss. Just in case. Hope everyone is safe and warm and surviving. I wonder when we'll get power back????
