I’ve already written about EVP (electronic voice phenomenon) whereby one can supposedly record the voices of the dead, as well as offered some tips on how this can be accomplished. See: http://www.gather.com/viewArticle.jsp?articleId=281474976874191
We assume when we hear those voices – at least ghost hunters do – that they come from disembodied spirits – people who have passed over to the “other side” but are still lingering on the earth plane for whatever reason. However, we don’t consider just how many voices are really out there.
It has been suggested that if it is possible for some spirits to be lost in the physical realm, why couldn’t it happen to all of us. What if – and this is only a “what if,” that’s just what happens when we die? What if we don’t go anywhere? What if we wander until some higher power decides what to do with us? What if our souls simply wander forever? Are we all doomed to be ghosts?
Now that is not something I’d like to think about for too long and I’m sure you wouldn’t either. I would prefer to think that our souls move on to a higher plane of existence or “heaven” as is stated in the Bible.
Ghost hunting groups and other researchers around the world capture these voices wherever they go – haunted buildings, graveyards, even locations that previously had no reputation for being haunted. These spirits seem to be everywhere. There are adults, children, even pets. Some are happy, while others are sad, nasty or violent. To know that they are lost in some kind of other-dimensional limbo is not only frightening, but also very sad. You would think that after living a tumultuous and often difficult life on the physical plane, that one’s spirit could expect a little peace upon death. But is it really so?
An Alternate View
Another view that is gaining in popularity is that the EVP voices and other sounds we hear at supposedly haunted locations are actually “imprints” – somewhat like an echo of what once was in a particular location. If there was a violent death in a particular house, a holographic imprint would be attached to that site, along with the sights and sounds of those most distressing moments in its past.
Since everything in this world (repeat – EVERYTHING) is comprised of energy in some form and energy cannot be eliminated, but rather changed, part of that energy may be “imprinted” on this plane of existence during our lifetime. If that is the case, what we think we see and/or hear at a haunted location may be simply a holographic recording of the people and events that occurred in the past.
I tend to think that many locations are displaying this kind of phenomenon. The reason I believe this is that when I experienced a past life review, I was presented with a three-dimensional type of movie that captured the pertinent events of my life that I needed to see. Like a panoramic movie screen, it was laid out before me and I could both see and hear these things just as they had originally occurred.
I have written many stories as well about various hauntings and while most of them seem to be genuine events, there was one in particular that really got me thinking about imprints. It was the case of a haunted building in a national park in the U.S. where a woman had decided to set up a small shop. The park itself had seen civil war. From the get go, she heard footsteps, voices, singing and so on – some of it seemed to come right out of the walls. I couldn’t help but think that a lot of “energy” from the past must be trapped there.
However, I don’t believe all ghostly phenomena can be attributed to holographic imprints. For example, in the story noted above, the woman also experienced poltergeist-type phenomena where items would fly through the air or mysteriously disappear and reappear again. A problem also arises when a ghost hunter or other interested individual manages to carry on an interactive conversation with a spirit. If their seeming presence is just a recording, how can they interact and respond to questions?
One person who would likely agree with the existence of “imprints” is biologist and author Dr. Rupert Sheldrake. He has spent many years studying what he calls “morphic resonance.” He believes memory is inherent in nature. (See: http://www.sheldrake.org/Articles&Papers/papers/morphic/morphic_intro.html)
Last year, he received £100,000 when he was appointed to the Perrott-Warwick Scholarship for psychical research and parapsychology, which is administered by Trinity College, Cambridge – the university from which he graduated with a First Class honors degree in biochemistry.
Sheldrake has also participated in the TV program on Paranormal Pigeonsfor FiveTV and a discussion for BBC Radio 4's The Material World about his report on telepathy to the British Association for the Advancement of Science, which annoyed some fellow scientists who felt the event was not suitable for the discussion of paranormal topics that had no basis in reality.
More recently, Sheldrake has also had his theories on the paranormal put to the test by ITV1 London region in England. Though the program didn’t really prove anything, it did put Sheldrake's theory of morphic resonance across in layman's terms and demonstrated how its implications could be put to the test.
In the first of a new series of Reel London, titled The Man with the Extended Mind, reporter Jes Benstock recreated some of the telepathy research experiments, even taking part in one of them. Benstock sat blindfolded and at the sound of a click, had to tell Sheldrake if he felt he was being stared at or not. The staring was done, incidentally, at a reflection of the back of his head.
Other experiments involved a dog who appeared to sense that his owner was returning home and an amputee who experienced "phantom limb" effects: having feelings in the arm which he lost in a motorbike accident in the TT Races on the Isle of Man. In this last case, however, it was others – his partner and another person who was sensitive – who stood on one side of a door and were asked to say where they felt his non-existent arm was penetrating the door, which was determined by numbers one to six on both sides. The partner was almost totally wrong, but the male sensitive's did much better.

we did meter readings in the local graveyards and got nada, even from newer graves.. but we went into the local 24 hr diner that had been there for years and just outside the door got readings off the scale...
Intuitively, that makes sense and seems reasonable that more than one explanation will explain those phenomenas.
And then if you determine you have an active haunting, you can have a grounded spirit or a visiting one.
