As some of you know I have been busting my ass remodeling our house so we could have it appraised. This past year we put about 4 grand into the house, including new cabinets, counter tops, floor and drywall in the kitchen, new drywall in the half bath and paint, paint, paint. Also I replaced 6 panes of glass in various broken windows and storm windows. I saved a ton of money by doing everything but the drywall myself. And no matter what my husband says, I did 99% of the work MYSELF. He mostly sat around or rummaged in the tool chest and then would dissapear into the basement mumbling.
Any-hoo... so the house appraised at 180,000 a year and a half ago. This year it appraised for 183,000. WHAT??? Let's do the math... 180,000 last year, 4 grand in new stuff and we only go up 3 grand??When I questioned the dollar amount, I was told they deducted 6 grand because our barn..ahem, cough cough.."garage" doesn't have "real" garage doors. Instead it has barn doors. I don't know on what world garage doors cost 6 grand! Also it badly needs a few coats of paint, but gees, 6 grand???
So here I sit, feeling like someone stole my candy, shot my dog and called my momma a name. I am tired, cut up, and my hair has paint and caulk in it. The good news is the loan will still go through and we will pay too much for it.
But I wouldn't change a thing, being a home owner makes it all worth it,,, well other than winning the lotto and being able to pay someone else to get cut up, covered in paint, caulked....

as for painting the barn.. I am in northern illinois in january..I would have to be crazy to paint now..and besides we would still have barn doors...
From what I understand also, the market and what other houses are selling for in the neighborhood, have as much to do with the "value" than any improvements you make. You rarely get back everything you have put into it, so just enjoy it for yourself.
Take care.
mom I already have a piggy ;-)
John, most homes here go for 200,000 to a half a million. My old house is behind badly ;-(
What a waste!!!
How can they just decide that?? Can you fight it?
About your barn/ garage... is it just the doors that changes the category? Is it that they swing open instead of going up, or that they somehow don't seal the way a garage is expected to against the elements? Just curious.
