Celebrations have begun for ringing in the New Year. It's very important if you have been drinking at all to find a safe ride home. Please don't let my story become yours or anyone you love.
On New Years Eve 1993, my brother was riding in a car of someone who had one drink. They were traveling down a road both drove daily. They knew the road well. Almost to their next destination, the car my brother was riding in slid on a small piece of black ice. They were partially in the other lane and were hit by an on coming car. My brother was killed, the driver was charged with his death. All of this could have been prevented had one persons judgment not been slightly impaired. You may not think one drink would impair anyone but it does, even if you/ they don't feel it.
My brother was a son, brother, grandson, uncle, loved family member, friend, fellow student and co-worker. He was 22 years old with a military future, a good job and someone he was interested spending the rest of his life with. All those hopes and dreams gone over someones impaired judgment.
Please do not drink and drive this New Years Eve or any other time. There are plenty of safe alternatives. Go celebrate and have a great time but arrive home safe.
Some safe alternatives to get home after drinking, a sober family member or friend, a taxi, a bus or even the police department would see you get home safe. Some places have the Sober Line where you or the bartender call and they get you home.
Don't Drink & Drive. Have a safe and Happy New Year.
