I don't mean for this to sound vain by any means, but I am trying to become healthier this year. I am doing in for health reasons, but also for physical beauty reasons as well. Now here is my dilema, I wanted to know if anyone had any suggestions for me. We have a community center in my town and they have treadmills and weight equipment (thank god they are letting me use them for free), I want to start running (and enter a 5 k one day) so if anyone has any running tips that would be great. You don't think that this sounds vain do you?

At a center, you might like these machines: Leg extension, hamstring curl, abdomen machines, upper body machines. Ask someone to show them to you and also to set weights that are appropriate for your level. You wouldn't want to hurt yourself.
I love machines because they work on one group at a time. You can sit and feel lazy, yet work on one group at a time. Much easier than a class, though a class is highly valualbe, too.
I like the traditional Stairmast machine. Many people know prefer the Elliptical, which is very valuable. I like the Stairmaster because the Elliptical makes my foot slip out. The Stairmaster has a strap to keep the foot in. Both machines will smooth out a person's body from the lower half, especially, which is genearlly where we need the most work.
A rowing machine is exclellent for back and abdomen work.
I cross country machine is excellent, but I hate them, because I do not have good balance.
A bicycle is excellent, but a treadmill is better. The Two are different, though, and you should comgine them.
A treadmills should be used for a walk that is as fast as you can muster. If you only walk slowly on a treadmill, it will not do you much good.
Try a little bit at a time. The goal is to enjoy it and to WANT to return.
