For the last few years conservative groups have been touting the need to "Save Christmas" as if it was really in danger. Leaders of this movement have made a lot of money apparently according to this article and have only managed to change Wal Mart from saying "Happy Holidays" to "Merry Christmas" as if there was something offensive about the former.
Is Christmas really threatened? Well there are some on the left who are upset that a "religious" holiday is being recognized and celebrated on a national level, thus violating the separation between church and state. There are also some religious groups that do not believe in celebrating christmas, both Christian (i.e. Jehova's Witnesses) and Non-Christian. This is a very small minority that wants to do away with christmas, so I would not consider it a threat in any way.
What both sides do not get is that Christmas is way more than a religious holiday. Easter is still pretty much a religious holiday, and the fact that it is held on a Sunday means there is no need for a special day off.
Here is my proposal. I want the government to declare a redundant secular holiday called National Family Day to be celebrated on December 25th along with Christmas. It would take the air out of the left who think that Christmas is only a religious holiday, and at the same time would allow those that do not believe in celebrating Christmas a day to celebrate anyway they want. What is more universal than respecting and honoring families? It would also take the air out of the religious right since "National Family Day" would eliminate the seperation of church and state argument against Christmas, and what is more symbolic of Christmas than spending time with your family?

Christians werent mad because they "wouldnt be happy anyway" Joe. They were mad that some think Christmas shouldnt be said because it might offend some people. If you think Christmas offends some and dont want to say it once again I DONT CARE!!! Just dont think you have the right to force your "enlightenment" on everybody else by passing new rules that say nobody can use the words that so easily offend the thin skinned angry left.. There is only one side here that has tried to tell people what can and cannot be said. The other side just wants their freedom of speech and right to free expression.
Seems like Sears, KMart, Walmart and some others got the idea. If there bottom line was impacted by forbidding their employess to say Merry Christmas, I obviously am not the only one who isw offended.
In the second place, there are still far too many stores that use only Happy Holidays. Best Buy, Walgreens, the Gap, Old Navy, Abercrombie and Fitch. I am not sure about Target since I won't shop there during the Christmas season because of their stance on the Salvation Army. Non-Christians who are offended by the use of the phrase "Merry Christmas" are free to shop at stores that do not offend them.
In the third place, if it is true that there is no war on Christmas and merchants have the choice of not saying Merry Christmas out of a genuine desire to not offend their other customers as opposed to an attempt to shove secularism down the throats of Christians, it is equally true that no one is shoving Christianity down the throats of non-Christians. There are a lot more Christians than there are non-Christians so look at the equities of offending the two groups. Secularism is being shoved down the throats of Christians.
