I have just gone through numerous alerts to articles posted to various groups. At least half (or more) of these articles had nothing what so ever to do with any of the groups they were posted to.
You have just wasted my time. That annoys me.
If I open an article posted to a group I belong to and the article is off topic to the group, I am rating a 1 and moving on without comment. I am sick and tired of people who think that every last word they write is relevant to every last group on gather. Look, get over yourself. If I open an article posted to a bird group, it is because I wish to read about birds. I do not understand why this concept is so damned difficult for so many people.
I don't want to hear crying over drive-by 1 rates. If you got a 1, look at the groups you posted to. Therein will your answer likely lay.
Also, if you post wrongly to a group that I won, I will kick it as soon as I see it... if you do this twice to me, I will kick you from the group entirely.
Get a freakin clue and stop wasting my time.
I know there have been many other articles addressing this issue... I don't care. I hope there are as many more on this issue as it takes to get idiots slapped hard enough to knock it the hell off.

"Oooh, what's this? Freedom of expression fries? Civil liberty burgers?"
S.R... that would require getting out of this chair and going downstairs.
It seems pretty simple to me, and yet people do this over and over and over again... and after the 18-hundreth time of saying it, I do tend to lose the urge to hand-hold and coddle people.
You know those nightmare stories about highschool kids house-setting and then throwing drunken parties the cops have to break up? That would be me, but your house would still be very, very, very clean.
Unfortunately, I'm moving to Canada this summer and will probably be there steadily for another three years or so.
Gather has groups to make it easier for people (especially new people) to find subjests of interest. When people who know better post completely helter skelter and disregard to what groups they are posting, it undermines this entire system... and confuses new folks like yourself.
S.R... I see. Damn. That bites.
If I were you though, I wouldnt sweat the small stuff cause at the end of the day, the anger over this issue will still remain unresolved and you will still be angry. Disconnect from these people or just dont read the articles but I really dont think that they warrant a 1 because some might actually be pretty good articles. But, that is your thing. I hope you have a better day. PEACE!
BUT... a prety good article on ducks is a very shitty article in a group about Car Repairs. No?
Gads. Then there was teh 12 emails in my gather account either begging for donations or asking me to go read their article... which also annoys me.
And see, you mention Lugosi, I think why yes, a nice big spike would work wonders around here... HA!
Zap zap zap!
James, now that Lori has smoothed over the hurt this caused you, I hope my question won't open any wounds. I am trying to understand the way others think so these incidents won't surprise or disappoint me so much in the future. If you moved into a new neighborhood and saw the woman next door run across the street and enter another neighbor's house without knocking, would you think it was okay for you to enter any home you wanted without knocking? If you were driving on a street with a posted speed limit of 35 and several cars zipped past you, would you assume speed limits are no longer binding? If the lease said no pets allowed and your cabinets were infested with roaches, would you think that meant it was okay to bring in a dog? I truly do not understand why adults come to this site and think the rules don't apply to them, and wonder if they think the same thing in other circumstances, of if this disregard for rules is something they reserve only for Gather.
As most of you know, I wrote an article several months ago about posting to groups. I don't even remember the name of it, but it's in there somewhere.
Yay for you, Lori.
I found a poem that used the tag education and then something for a freebie that used education. I am not sure if I should flag these or what, but when I have a chance I will read the FAQs again and see what they suggest. That bothers me just as much as the wrong articles being posted.
I have a child birthday parties group and someone tried to post a Bacardi Rum Cake recipe there, and I thought about sending an email but thought why bother.
The gather folks also are guilty of the posting to wrong groups, they gave me a list to post to for my equifax article and that was an odd listing of groups. There is a new gather staff member that is a member of my union workers group and tries to post off topic but my groups are mostly moderated and they never get through.
Goodmorning
I also understand that brand new people may not understand all the rules. But if they have joined twenty or thirty groups, they have been around enough to see what GROUPS means.
Now for a note on the other side of the issue: I was invited to join a group, which I decided to do. A few days later I posted an article to that group, because I honestly felt it was relevent. However, it got kicked out, and the group owner posted a comment stating he wasn't allowing off topic articles. Of course, he has every right to do this, but maybe SOME groups need to be a little more specific in their group description, and in stating what will be accepted. I mean, "anything relating to....whatever the group is for" can be misunderstood.
Bonnie, I'm sure they didn't mean to insult you. The alcohol in the rum is destroyed by heat.
I honestly don't think giving 1's to one and all, is going to solve anything!! That just sounds like another battle between US and THEM, waiting to happen.
I agree with the annoyance factor on going to a group, specifically about something (like birds, cars, etc), to open it up and find something totally off topic.
BTW, Lynn, not all groups are moderated. Un-moderated groups don't get to accept or reject articles. For owners of moderated groups (like Lori and me) this is an evem bigger problem. I rejected an image of a rose submitted to my classical music group. It was reposted three times and I rejected it each time. It was a nice image, but it had nothing to do with classical music.
Lori, I'm with you also about mass emails asking me to read (and presumably rate) someone's submission - to the Amazon contest for example. I keep track of the writers whose work I want to read and I know when there's something of theirs up. I think I'll write an article about this one, too. It's a little more complicated than off topic posts.
Can I move to Scandinavia? I think I'd like it there. For one thing, it has so many Scandinavians.
Liz.. no doubt!
Bob.. I think she was refering to me. heh. And welcome to Gather. ;) :/ ehh ok those are the only two emoticons I know. HA!
Mugg.. you bastard. Oh how I adore you.
Charles... come on over! We are about to either move or renovate. In either case, we could use ya right now. muwhahaha
Sarah... Hi!
Marsha... OT is Ot is OT. If they cannot figure that out, then it ain't my problemo. Yes, some group owners should be more actively tossing out the garbage, but life happens and tis the season right now. Ultimately it is up to the poster to figure out that their poem to god is not about a cockatiel, a fish pond, nor a travel article. It really is not all that difficult to figure out.
Elias... my old buddy, I am sooo very glad you decided to come over to the dark side.
Lori C... no worries here. You know me. I am brusk, but basically fair, as long as everyone is attempting to use their brain.
Bonnie, Nancy, Lynn, Donna, Sandy,... ohj my hands hurt. It is raining here in south Sweden and my Lupus is acting up. Forgive me if I just say How-deeee!
I think it's OK to tell the people in your network that you've entered Amazon Shorts. I did. Those articles don't appear on your own site and so may not be seen by those who would likely read them. I personally feel cheated if I discover too late that I haven't been given the CHOICE of reading a contact's work.
Having said that, I completely understand the frustration of finding an article on goldfish posted to a site devoted to Islamists. Moya
The thing is, I do not like being solicited for donations either. Like I said in my Top Ten Airline article, I give. I give a lot. And I do it year round... to my own favorite causes. Your cause is a very good one, but I don't like being bugged for things like that... so I view that as yet another OT posting when I want to just read about birds in that group. You see what I'm saying here at all?
I did give you a 10, though, and a point or two ;)
Your problem does have some to do with owners themselves checking on their groups, and maybe you should contact them directly. I belong to a couple of groups that the owner hasn't logged in for months, and wondered whether I should set up my own group on the same subject?
In most cases in my experience, an email explaining to the person usually fixes the problem without any animosity. Often, they are accidents because of the abbreviated publication lists, and groups with such similar names. I've made the same mistake myself in the past.
Then again, there are probably some that don't even care. Luckily I haven't had that problem with my groups.
Take care.
Heya Sheeri! Welcome to the madhouse. HA!
