What's in a Name: Naming a Gather Group

It seemed so easy then...a name that would spell out out the Group's purpose even without reading the Group description.

Art by Family...could any name be simpler or more defined? It seemed promotable and defendable, I thought, in my halcion days.

Art that is created by family members, friends, friends' children, parents' creative efforts--anything that was not created by the Gather member doing the posting/publishing...casting the limelight upon someone dear, you could say...and not hoggin' it up!

Poetry or stories by a long-ago fifith-grader? No problemo, for word pictures fit, too, of course.

Photos of artwork in any medium by your kid or by his/her best friend? Excellent! Publish away, my peops. Creative parents in the family? Smashing!

Discovered a forgotten stash of your children's art in a dusty drawer or inside an old sketchbook? Spotlight their efforts whether from years ago--or from yesterday morning.

Got Refrigerator Art? Cooly Perfect!

And yet I find myself removing images and articles, a task which is against my very nature...for the sake of the content of a specifically-targeted Group...Art by Family (subliminal message)...Art by Family...now...

...must you blame me? ;)

Update 5:36 pm: have set Art by Family as an owner-moderated Group now...perhaps that will be efficacious...we'll see.

I have written Gather to ask for a method to organize my groups for publishing. It is hard toremember what the group is expecting based soley on some of the names

It's unfortunate that group members submit irrelevant content, despite the clear name and clear goals of your groups -- and most other unmoderated groups.

If you don't moderate the submissions to your group, you're gonna get junk from any number of insensitive users -- and end up moderating after publication anyway.

Right, Terry--I've wondered before why one's groups list can't be organized by name, Category, or something...alphabetized wouyld be an improvement, wouldn't it?

Plus when you add a new group to your list, it all changes positions so you can't go by where a group was listed the last time you posted--and looked for it.

Carol, you are so right--maybe I should set up Art by Family for moderation--I had tried that before and didn't like it--for one reason because I think it actually discourages peole from posting! You just can't please Some People (me!)

Jude, as Auntie mentions above, this is a very common complaint among all Gather Group owners. Hopefully Gather will make changes soon to the publication process to make it easier for members to identify appropriate groups. Mistakes will still occur, but a few simple 'tweeks' can make a big difference in what we group owners have to deal with almost daily.

ALL blogs, everywhere, suffer this spam problem. Spammers are not good marketers otherwise they would know better. All you can do is weed out the muck and keep the gems.

Everyday I get loads of invites to yet another group. I rarely add any more because there isn't enough originality to entice me. Plus many groups have lost their original focus.

Well, Chateaux Gathereaux accepts most anything because it's all wine related - and one can think and create a variety of things while sippin on the red...however, Miz Jude, I totally understand what you mean...I try my best to only submit to general category Groups where my photos and images are welcomed and to Groups that match the subject that I've written about.
