Dream Girls

So last night, Scarlett, Mary and myself attended a screening of Dream Girls down in Battery Park City. Can I tell you, I loved the movie?

Prior to last night, there was only one movie nee musical that I actually liked (who can not like Chicago). Now, I have to throw Dream Girls into the mix. The casting for the movie was perfect. But by far my favorite character/actor was Effie White/Jennifer Hudson. Jennifer Hudson has a voice that makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end. She has a passion and a soul in her voice that will bring tears to your eyes....literally. You truly feel for her character throughout the movie. Don't get me wrong, Beyonce (or Bouncy as my friend Denise calls her) is really good too, but Jennifer stole the show. You even feel for Eddie Murphy's character James "Thunder" Early. It was a little scary how much he gets into character there. And you know that Jaime Foxx is a great character when you start talking to the screen as if he is a real person right there in front of you.

Loosely based on the life and times of the Supremes, Dream Girls takes you from the rise of the girl group to their farewell tour. With a "happier" ending for Effie than her Supreme counterpart Florence Ballard who passed away at the young age of 32, Dream Girls is for the fan of stylings of R&B music "back in the day." I strongly urge everyone to go out and support this film in theatres (no bootleg videos from Ray-Ray please) and buy the soundtrack (no LimeWire please). This is an amazing movie and all the stars deserve to reap the full benefits. They put their hearts and souls into this project and it shows.

sounds like something to see and hear. I love Beyonce's music and own everything she's ever done.

I saw a free screening on Tuesday and I agree, the movie is great. It definitely has some missteps (not enough character development is my biggest gripe), but the music and dancing is so much fun! I have to disagree with you on one point and that is the casting of Beyonce as Deena Jones. She did a piss poor job in the acting scenes, although she was great in the performance scenes (but, that would be expected...she is a performer!) I know they cast her because she is a megastar and will probably bring in a lot of dollars, but her acting was terrible, as is her diction. I could never forget I was watching Beyonce every time she opened her mouth. Good thing Jennifer Hudson is a natural talent who played her role flawlessly. Overall, a must-see!

Elita, I understand about your disagreement, but Beyonce is like Diana Ross in so many ways. The story of Destiny's Child is reminiscent of the Supremes/Dream Girls. Diana Ross was the "star" that was used to draw people in. That's what they did with Beyonce in both the movie and real life. Few if any of the commercials mention Jennifer Hudson. But the real star shines when you watch the movie.

LOL John. You sure you want this type of life? It's not always the glitz and glam like it sounds. Tomorrow I'll be running to Philly for a 2:30 interview with a magazine down there with the client and then head back here for holiday parties only after getting home at crack of dawn from events tonight. All I can say is that I haven't been able to cook or clean for the past 2 months!

As I sit here writing policy briefs and running statistical models, it sounds fantastic.

I look forward to seeing this...and especially forward to seeing Jennifer Hudson. I was a big fan of hers when she was on American Idol

I can't wait to see this. Jennifer Hudson is even getting Oscar buzz for this.

Tamara, I am so envious! I haven't cleaned house in two months either and all i have to show for it is a messy house!

I agree with you about Jennifer Hudson. Her voice sends one's soul stirring and can touch the deepest parts. Thanks for sharing.

I'm glad to see Beyonce exposed her acting talents as well as singing. Definitely a good follow up to Pink Panther..
