I can't be labeled.
So leave my name sticker blank okay?
We all get our share of labels and definitions to a point.
Labels or categories can give a quick overview of things, but usually in a very superficial way, and much information is lost in the process. Too much, I say.
A label can cause someone to never see a human being as he or she really is.
Putting a label on another person at times, is really just avoiding the trouble of really getting to know someone in the first place.
I'd be lying if I say this doesn't have a definite impact on people. A label can be used as powerful weapon in disguise.
Labels and categorizations are often motivated by an unconscious or even a conscious desire to create a distance.
It only gives us a very superficial understanding of others, labels also shut out.
Do not label me for I am not that simple.
I don't allow labels to have that much power in my life.
I am just too complicated to be shoved into a label.
I don't fit into a neat box or container and could never be comprehended by a single glance at the lid or label.
Can anyone?
Labels lead to stigma -- a word that means branding and shame. And stigma leads to discrimination. Everyone knows why it is wrong to discriminate against people because of their race, religion, culture, or appearance.
Treat people with the dignity and respect we all deserve. At the very least treat people the way you want to be treated.
Or hey, keep labeling but don't stick me in one of your categories.
In that case, I have a label to suggest that you can stick yourself right into.
I will close with several quotes. You pick your favorite. Mine is below by Mark Twain.

The question of who or what the Me is, is not a simple one at all. - Mark Twain
If you have always believed that everyone should play by the same rules and be judged by the same standards, that would have gotten you labeled a radical 50 years ago, a liberal 25 years ago and a racist today. - Thomas Sowell
We must not allow other people's limited perceptions to define us. - Virginia Satir
Everyone sees you as you appear to be, few realize what you really are. - Machiavelli
Labels are for filing. Labels are for clothing. Labels are not for people. - Martina Navratilova
The best minds, who love truth for its own sake, think much less of property in truth. They accept it thankfully everywhere, and do not label or stamp it with any man's name. - Ralph Waldo Emerson
I dislike labels. ... We are far too complicated and complex to be boxed into a particular mindset simply because that's what everyone else thinks. I take exception to all those people who think they have me (or you) figured out when they really don't know us at all. - Mike Hendricks

It will not allow me to space the quotes properly and keep adjusting itself with a mind of its own....lol
Oh well.....
pillar of the community - 4 words but you can imagine all that made that person that way.
man of God -
child of the universe
nice person
caring individual
teacher
doctor
artist
neighbour
lover
wife
mother
etc
all labels that are only as limiting as the individual who is looking at it
Peculiar how you can get labeled differently. The Left says I'm a fanatical Christian right winger and the Right says am a communist and an extreme Liberal...go figure.
I'm an author, so title me author.
I'm a screenwriter, so label me a screenwriter.
I'm a writer, a necessary fact for both the above.
I'm a friend, for without friends, what have we got?
I'm a father, for I have children.
I'm a businessman, for I own a business.
Labels are a fact of life, beginning with the most obvious of them all.
I'm a human being.
We are labeled from the momen we are born, from baby, infant, child, etc. etc. etc.
As we get older, those labels become more frequent: Boyfriend, girlfriend, lover, husband/wife, etc. Labels exist, because we exist within that framework.
That's just one writer's point of view.
Labels can be good for somethings but definitely not others. Its ok to label people by their titles but not to label them because of the things that they are not capable of doing. Its like when we label people, stupid or ignorant cause they don't know something. Thats just horrible. It could really hurt someones self esteem. You never know the impact that words have on people. I've seen people try to committ suicide cause someone called them something that they weren't. We don't realize the things we say can have such a huge impact on someone's life.
Its good to keep ourselves in check. Thanks again for reminding me.
as for the "GOOD" labels....they are still labels and sometimes the good is the enemy of the best.
True Carol
Just when you think I can be labeled you'll find something in me that defies that label....is that the same with you Joy?
Not that you're right or wrong, but to each their own.

Ernest,
Yes, some labels do describe us. I am not talking about those types of labels, at all. :-)
It is the labels that tend to be negative I have a problem with.
Thank you all for commenting. :-)
Does anyone remember Dr. Seuss's Snooty Sneetches story, about creatures with stars on their bellies- vs. those without...
One group thought they were better than the other...
Now, the Star-Belly Sneetches
Had bellies with stars.
The Plain-Belly Sneetches
Had none upon thars.
The snooty Star-Belly Sneetches decided that they were better than the Plain-Belly sort and would purposely exclude them from "frankfurter roasts or picnics or parties or marshmallow toasts."

Then:
"I'm quite happy to say
That the Sneetches got really quite smart on that day,
The day they decided that Sneetches are Sneetches
And no kind of Sneetch is the best on the beaches.
That day, all the Sneetches forgot about stars
And whether they had one, or not, upon thars."

Felix,
That's funny...and very true at the same time. In fact ,pretty much my point in a nut shell. Most who label negatively are totally incorrect.
Love your photo BTW.
Glad someone out there agrees with me on this.
I agree with you. There have been and still are too many labels pushed upon people that have hurt or helped them. We don't need labels - don't label me either, just call me a friend. I am featuring this on THE PLACE TO VENT AND JUST TALK ABOUT THINGS.

with thanks, and hopefully more comments as to how people do feel about this.

GOOD ONE JOY!!!
DR. SEUSS IS FULL OF GOOD MESSAGES. SEE BELOW:
From condemning isolationism and attacking anti-Semitism to his later works for literacy, the environment, and against the arms race, Dr. Seuss's most popular works reflect his passion for fairness, democracy and tolerance.
But this is a side of Dr. Seuss's work that is rarely discussed. Most Americans don't know, for example, that during World War II he drew editorial cartoons for the left-wing New York newspaper PM, or that he made army propaganda films with Frank Capra. Many readers didn't know that The Sneetches was inspired by Seuss's opposition to anti-Semitism, that Horton Hears a Who! was a political statement about democracy and isolationism, or that The Lorax and The Butter Battle Book were parables about the environment and the arms race. Dr. Seuss's true genius may lie in the fact that all of this was done with such humor and finesse, that few realized he was being political at all.

Yes, a good one indeed. ;-)
My response is simply "Till the day you die you never will."
