Whatever one thinks of Mel the Man, this movie deserves watching. While containing more than it's share of gore and violence, as many of Mel Gibson's movies do seem to have, the plot and action in this movie make it very worthwhile.
The movie is equipped with subtitles in English, and the action is practically non-stop inside of the first ten minutes of the story. The main character is Jaguar Paw, who learns a couple of valuable lessons from his wise father. And while I don't necessarily agree with the depiction of the Mayan people, the movie is really about finding courage and strength in the very worst of circumstances.
The truths and fictions aside, watching the unfolding of a 'prophecy' that is mainly directed at the Mayans, leads to many exciting and sometimes scary, and oftentimes gory path for all characters involved.
There is a lesson for both the Mayans and the Forest people in this movie. The Forest People are taken over in the most brutal way by the Mayans, and the Mayans are portrayed as a vicious and uncaring group. Jaguar time and again proves that cunning and courage can beat the biggest of obstacles.
This movie is definitely not for small children or those who have a problem with pretty graphic violence. The movie definitely has plenty of that. Still, I have to recommend this movie just because it kept me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end.

maybe next time he will make one for us wimps.
I haven't watched "Braveheart" or "The Passion of The Christ" and I won't watch this movie either. I like Mel, despite his personal problems, but I wish he would lighten up with the over the top violence depicted in his films.
