Amazing video of a horse rescue in the Netherlands

I received this link in an email tonight - it is one of the finest things I've seen in a long time. A group of about 100 horses got stranded on a tiny island in the Netherlands because of flooding from a heavy storm. For awhile, they were being fed hay by good samaritans, but it was decided that they could be lured off the island after the waters receded just a little. A small group of women on horseback set off to do the job....

Sweet, Christine. :) Thanks for all your comments. I have swam a horse and realize the risks those women were taking to make that rescue happen. I am glad you all found it as impressive as I did.

Debbie, thank you so much for posting this to the Wildlife Rehab group! The video is absolutely awe inspiring, and the beautiful Vangelis soundtrack is a perfect accompaniment to the footage.

I can only imagine the exhilaration those gallant horsewomen must have felt during and after this daring rescue. I'm sure their hearts were pounding, and I wouldn't be surprised if they were crying, as I was watching them. Bless their brave, kind souls, and those of all people who care enough to take on the responsibility of caring for for animals in distress. It reaffirms my belief in humankind.

Here's a good British news report about the incident. Apparently the horses were left on the flood plain even though flood warnings had been broadcast. I hope the owners are prosecuted for animal cruelty & neglect.

I saw that video, too. A friend sent me this link to it: http://video.google.nl/videoplay?docid=-4584913278289860160 I cried like a baby watching it, too. I was afraid that the horses would possibly trample the riders at first, and was amazed how they just followed in one long line. It was breathtaking and amazing.
