10 reflections.....John Lennon

Today is the day John Lennon left this world, but to think only of his death on this day?  No, I think I will use the day to reflect on how his life and work. 

 

Here are my 10.  What are yours?

 
  1. He taught me to Imagine.

You may think that I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one.

     

  1. He taught me that  ‘love’ comes in many forms.  And I need to explore them all.
 
  1. When I was alone and  pregnant with my son, I would wear my “bellyphones”.  I   I thought that if I sent him messages of love and humanity.  Real and Ideal…..that we would all be ok.  Today, my son may flub the words…but he knows the melody in all sense of the word.
 
  1. You love who you love.  No one else’s opinion matters.
 
  1. We all must Give Peace a Chance.  In this big world, in our own little worlds.
 
  1. He was an imperfect person.  So am I.  And it is ok.
 
  1. All You Need is Love.  The rest is gravy.
 
  1. I would like to be taken down to Strawberry Fields….forever.
 
  1. You can take someone out of this world, but you cannot kill their legacy or the good things they have left on this Earth for the rest of us.
 
  1. Tomorrow is never promised.

years ago on returning from a fishing trip my Dad came to me and said, "they killed John Lennon", with the saddest look on his face. The Old Man had not been a fan of either the Beatles OR Lennon. Over the years however I saw a grudging respect build for the MAN who stood to his principles, took the lumps that came his way with humor and grace and finally still with grace won his point.

If Lennon could sway my Dad we are unlikely to see this equal again.

"God is a concept, by which we measure our pain." There are no deeper words from Lennon, I think, than that. I always preferred his work, over any other beatle's, because he wrote from his heart. Paul wrote from his pocketbook, and rarely hit the same level. The other thing he should be remembered for, was that he was the first house husband I ever heard of, and did much to bust stereotypes in that dept.

Thank you everyone for sharing this day with me. I was 10 when he passed. But I do remember feeling a hole in my heart ....and I could not explain why....until later. I imagine....that were he here, he would want a celebration of life...not of his death. You cannot help but remember the day....but I think you can try to honor that a man is more than his death.

Terry....sort of yes, sort of no. It is kind of a long story maybe I will post about it.

I was thinking about what you said Ron. I still like Paul but not the same way I love John. I remember when they had that concert for 9/11 and Mr. McCartney played "Yesterday" and there was this moment, I felt....like a moment common to us all. It was there. And he broke into one of the songs of his to be release albums and the moment was just gone. Squandered, I felt. I was sad. That is probably not fair of me to say though. That I think was the difference....with John we shared that common thread of humanity......not to say that it is not there with Paul.....but it does feel different right? Or am I wrong?

A great article about a man I "grew up with".
The difference you felt in Paul's songs has a lot to do with Paul still being here.
John is a memory and what we remember is the best parts of him. We're still seeing Paul at his best and worst.
That's why Marilyn and James Dean and JFK are so popular years later. They never get older. 20 or 30 forever.
If you just want to compare writers from the heart, compare John to George and you'll have a better appreciation for George than you had before.
Sorry for the ramble..........
Look at Farrah, if she had passed when she was 25 or so, she would be remembered for ALL TIME as one of the beauties of our day. But we have seen her get older and she will never have that legacy.

or can you imagine Jimi Hendrix throwing out his hip trying to smash a guitar?

It was like night and day. I remember talking with people at the time that said, oh well at least we still have ringo george and paul, and I didn't say it, but I thought, we have nothing.

Yeah, but George didn't write much of consequence. While my guitar gently weeps, but my sweet lord got him knocked down in court for stealing the melody from "he's so fine". I did like his guitar work though.
