These are kind of limited choices - education about what? Shouldn't the education be ABOUT condoms and abstinence and needle exchange programs?

.... and after every human on our planet is taught how HIV works it will be up to them to resist the temptation to help it along into more human bodies. But the way it is now we are expecting people to behave themselves, and they simply do not understand the disease well enough to do so. I have always felt that we have wasted time obsessing about a cure when we should have addressed the vector of transmission. Some will be told and will ignore the knowledge, infecting themselves and others. But is that a good reason to not even try?

Aids is preventable, always has been, but so to is obesity, diabeties and most diseases. The knowledge is there for many but still it exists, more so amongst the ignorant. Because we know how to avoid it I can only conclude that the poorer countries are being subjected to it and not advised about how to avoid it. It has been suggested that aids is a culling system in countries that cannot provide for their peoples. I would prefer to think not.

It isn't, Emma. Thanx for pointing that out.

In some cultures, abstinence is not an option. Rape is tolerated and women do not have the right to say "no" to their husbands. The sex trade is rampant with it and a man who picks up AIDS from a prostitute would not know it in time to keep from infecting his wife.

Condoms and needle exchanges might put a dent in it here, but again, in some of the most deeply affected cultures, it is not a drug related issue. As for condoms, they would not use them.

Education is the only hope, and even then there are those it cannot reach. There is too much cultural, traditional growth needed before that can even begin to have an effect.
