The real issue here is that you are (each group) trying to suck less than the other. Face the fact that you all suck, and you'll be happier.
Gather will morph into what it will be, there is room for everyone.
If you don't like articles about crafts, jokes and recipes- then do not look at them. Are you seeking them out just to drop negative comments? What a waste of your "serious writer" time. grow up.
If you don't like poetry, haiku's and articles about some fundamentally boring 3rd world religious leader- skip them. Falling alseep at the pc is not good for you.

I'm a Gather newbie, but I see a place where anything can be shared. I think we all need to focus on the groups and people that fill whatever specific need we might have, and ignore everything else, including the naysayers who would narrow the boundaries of Gather. What constitutes "real" writing is indefinable. As long as we're all posting and sharing our thoughts, and not paying too much attention to the meanies, Gather will stay strong.
I do believe that I'll go post a recipe :o.
