The American love of flags is often remarked on by comedians all round the world.
To help Americans of the patriotic right to kick their flag habit here is a very funny post by Liz Davies featuring the British flag. The two people mentioned are top boys in Britsh government.
Take a lesson in irreverence. You will feel liberated.

I'm a little uncomfortable about this being posted to the No Whining, Fighting or Putting Things Down group, but I did not remove it. Almost, but not quite.
I'm a big Eddie Izzard fan, used to see him at the comedy club in London before he was international. Britain used to be very big on flags but of course as the crimes of our imperial period were exposed we distanced ourselves from that kind of patriotism.
I wonder who is familiar with the medieval word oriflamme? (literally it means "gold flame.") The oriflamme, a battle flag, symbolises the ashless fire, the thing that binds us as members of the same tribe, as compatriots, as people with a common cause. It is the association of this ideal, which should be above politics and religion, with political entities and with military ambition that cheapens the concept.
As Dr. Samuel Johnson said "patriotism is the last resort of the scoundrel."
