There's a new wave of fiber arts making it's way to your neighborhood. Watch out! It looks so innocent. The tools of the trade are so inexpensive -- especially if you have a coupon for your favorite craft store. The directions look so easy. Don't get me wrong, this is ALL true. That's what makes it so easy to fall into this addiction. The only thing they don't tell you is how much you'll go in debt buying the soft, fancy yarns!
The craft I'm warning you about is loom knitting. Some call this rake knitting or knitting on a round loom. Others refer to a specific name brand set of looms -- Knifty Knitter. And it really is easy, and fast -- if you use bulky yarns. You can make a child's hat while you watch a movie.
These are two sets of looms made by Provo Craft that are called Knifty Knitter looms. Each set costs about $20. I bought both with coupons from Michael's or A.C. Moore for half off. So, you can see I'm headlong into this addiction myself.

With these looms you can make anything from scarves to hats to snowmen to sweaters and afghans, and even, bookmarks.

I made this bookmark last night within an hour or so. It would have taken much less time had I used a bulkier yarn. But I am dazzled by the fun, brilliantly colored, eyelash yarns and the like. This piece was made using three different types of yarn/fibers.
Since I purchased the looms not even a month ago I have made an 18 inch tall snowman, a 5 foot scarf, a cover for a dog collar, a pair of mittens, this bookmark, and I'm in the middle of making a funky scarf/cowl neck. Oh, and I started a swap for people who knit using these looms. I am amazed at how little yarn is needed for these projects. Really, the only major expense is if you fall in love with the designer yarns. Then watch out -- for sales, that is. A.C. Moore recently had a coupon for 30% off your entire purchase. It only lasted for 2 days, but I made sure I was made the sale and.....you know what I bought -- a sack full of soft, beautiful yarns.
Keep your eyes open for this addictive hobby! You may catch it if you aren't careful -- and you'll be glad you did.
